Prevalence of Gastric Epithelial Tumors in Helicobacter pylori-uninfected Individuals Undergoing a Medical Checkup
Conclusion In the present H. pylori-uninfected subjects, the prevalence of gastric epithelial tumors found on an EGD examination was 0.28%. Endoscopic examination should be performed in H. pylori-uninfected individuals to detect such tumors in characteristic locations.PMID:38220193 | DOI:10.2169/internalmedicine.2955-23 (Source: Internal Medicine)

The Multi-dimensional Challenge of Poor Oral Health in Cirrhosis —Disparities and Solutions
Mr K is a 67-year-old military veteran with decompensated alcohol-related cirrhosis with ascites, as well as hepatic encephalopathy (HE), and was admitted to intensive care because of melena. Upper endoscopy revealed multiple oozing gastric ulcers without varices. On questioning after stabilization, the patient admitted to taking over-the-counter nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) owing to severe gum and tooth pain. He was ineligible for Veterans Affairs –based dental coverage and could not afford private dental care. (Source: Gastroenterology)

Li Fraumeni Syndrome predisposes to gastro-esophageal junction tumours
AbstractLi-Fraumeni Syndrome (LFS), caused by germline pathogenic variants inTP53, predisposes to a wide range of young-onset malignancies, particularly sarcoma, breast and brain cancer. More recently, an increased risk of gastric adenocarcinoma has been recognised, although uptake of surveillance upper endoscopy is unclear. Our retrospective review of 65 patients with LFS, of whom 53.8% had undergone endoscopy, identified four patients (6.2%) with gastro-esophageal junction (GEJ) adenocarcinomas. Two cases were found on asymptomatic screening and were early stage. No cases had family history of gastrointestinal malignancy...

The prospective validation of a scoring system to assess mucosal cleanliness during upper endoscopy (EGD)
Cleanliness of the mucosa of the upper gastrointestinal (UGI) tract is critical for performing a high-quality esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD). The aim of this study was to validate a recently developed UGI cleanliness scale (the PEACE system) in the detection of clinically significant lesions (CSL) in the UGI tract. Vitamin D Levels as a Potential Modifier of Eosinophilic Esophagitis Severity in Adults
ConclusionsAfter adjusting for age, sex, and race, 25(OH)D3 levels were lower in EoE cases than controls, but deficiency was not common. 25(OH)D3 levels were generally similar across most EoE disease features. (Source: Digestive Diseases and Sciences)

Plug-Assisted Retrograde Transvenous Obliteration for the Treatment of Duodenal Variceal Bleeding - A Case Report and Literature Review
Korean J Gastroenterol. 2023 Dec 25;82(6):295-299. doi: 10.4166/kjg.2023.105.ABSTRACTDuodenal varices are uncommon complications of portal hypertension. Although duodenal variceal bleeding is infrequent, it is a life-threatening condition with a high mortality rate. Non-surgical methods for duodenal variceal bleeding include endoscopic band ligation, endoscopic sclerotherapy, transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt, and retrograde transvenous obliteration. On the other hand, an optimal treatment strategy for this rare condition has not been established. A 38-year-old male with a history of alcoholic liver cirrhosis p...
