NASS vs ACGME Fellowships: Which Makes a Better Doctor in Real World?
ISMM Fellowships The primary focus of NASS-recognized ISMM fellowships is the clinical assessment and treatment of patients with spine and musculoskeletal conditions. The fellowships are unique from ACGME Pain Medicine fellowships, which require training in inpatient acute pain management, palliative care, psychiatry, pediatric pain management, and intubation. Benzodiazepines in palliative care
70 year old pancreatic cancer patient, unclear what stage, but receiving chemo/surgery for it. Also on fentanyl patch and oxycodone IR TID 5mg. Whats your overall policy with benzos in palliative care with a patient already on opioids? Are you more lenient, if patients respiratory function is being monitored? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Subspecialty+Palliative Care in academic setting
Hi everyone, Just wondering if there's anyone who's board certified/eligible in both HPM and a subspecialty of some sort (or primary care/hospitalist) who's able to practice both in an academic setting? (i.e. someone who's boarded in Medical Oncology/Hematology/Nephrology/PCCM etc. and HPM who does a mix of both, or someone who does a week of hospitalist + 1 week of HPM, rinse and repeat.) Basic question: can a person practice both another specialty/their original primary specialty and HPM... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

primary care physician/geriatrician and hospice/palliative care focus
I've volunteered a lot with hospice patients, for nearly five years now. It's extremely meaningful to me and I want to work with the elderly population as a primary care physician, because the aging population faces a lot of complex challenges and I want to help them. Is this okay to have this as my main focus for the "career goals/where do you see yourself in ten years" supplemental essay? I have some other plans but this is my main focus. Is this too narrow? Thank you. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Peds HPM
Been awhile since I’ve been on SDN haha. I’m a practicing peds hospitalist looking to move into palliative care. I considered it (and other fellowships) during residency but was just so burnt out that I decided not to do fellowship. Various things have aligned for me/my career in the past year making it feel like the right time to actually go back and make the switch. I’ve searched through SDN and haven’t really seen a lot about Peds HPM though. I have a mentor, hopefully a compelling... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Mentioning specialty of interest in secondaries?
I've answered a number of "anything else?" and "why us?" secondary questions by talking about my strong interest in geriatrics. For schools that offer extensive curricular/extracurricular/research opportunities in geriatrics and hospice/palliative care, I have described those as my main draws to the school. I know mentioning a (sub)specialty of interest is often considered bad form because so many people change their minds and you don't want to be narrow-minded, but I am REALLY interested in... palliative care without fellowship
Can psychiatrists do palliative care without fellowship? Does residency training cover the typical work like this. or is it reasonably learnable on the job? Seems like several local hospice jobs have been filled by family med or IM docs without palliative board cert. (Source: Student Doctor Network)
