The fentanyl-specific antibody FenAb024 can shield against carfentanil effects
Toxicol Lett. 2024 Apr 6;396:1-10. doi: 10.1016/j.toxlet.2024.03.008. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe surge in opioid-related deaths, driven predominantly by fentanyl and its synthetic derivatives, has become a critical public health concern, which is particularly evident in the United States. While the situation is less severe in Europe, the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction reports a rise in drug overdose deaths, with emerging concerns about the impact of fentanyl-related molecules. Synthetic opioids, initially designed for medical use, have infiltrated illicit markets due to their low production ...

Plasma drug screening using paper spray mass spectrometry with integrated solid phase extraction
AbstractDrug overdoses have risen dramatically in recent years. We developed a simple nontargeted method using a disposable paper spray cartridge with an integrated solid phase extraction column. This method was used to screen for ~160 fentanyl analogs, synthetic cannabinoids, other synthetic drugs, and traditional drugs of abuse in over 300 authentic overdose samples collected at emergency departments in Indianapolis. A solid phase extraction step was implemented on the paper spray cartridge to enable subnanograms per milliliter synthetic drugs screening in plasma. Analysis was performed on a quadrupole orbitrap mass spec...

Outcomes of Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest Patients Who Received Naloxone in an EMS System with a High Prevalence of Opioid Overdose
Opioid-associated out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OA-OHCA) is a subset of cardiac arrests that could benefit from measures outside of standard Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), such as naloxone. (Source: The Journal of Emergency Medicine)

The relationship between felt stigma and non-fatal overdose among rural people who use drugs
Drug overdose deaths in the United States exceeded 100,000 in 2021 and 2022. Substance use stigma is a major barrier to treatment and harm reduction utilization and is a priority target in ending the overdose ... (Source: Harm Reduction Journal)

“It’s Like A Partnership”: Exploring the Primary Care Experiences and Patient-Defined Goals of People Who Use Drugs
ConclusionsTo best meet the primary care goals of PWUD, these findings underscore the importance of primary care providers and programs facilitating such partnerships through organizational-level support anchored in harm reduction. Future research should explore how these experiences in primary care affect patient health outcomes, ultimately shaping best practices in the provision of high-quality primary care for PWUD. County-level factors associated with a mismatch between opioid overdose mortality and availability of opioid treatment facilities
ConclusionAssessing mismatch between treatment availability and need provides useful information to characterize counties that require greater public health investment. Interventions to reduce overdose mortality are unlikely to be effective if they do not take into account diverse upstream factors, including sociodemographics, disease burden, and geographic context of communities.
