Characteristics and Risk of Adverse Mental Health Events Amongst Users of the National Overdose Response Service (NORS) Telephone Hotline
AbstractThe National Overdose Response Service (NORS) is a Canadian mobile or virtual  overdose response hotline intended to prevent drug overdose deaths but has unexpectedly received mental health related calls, including adverse mental health events. Our study aimed to examine these occurrences and caller characteristics predictive of adverse mental health outcomes. Using the NORS call dataset, we conducted a descriptive representation of mental health occurrences and mental health emergencies along with correlative statistics. We found that NORS had received 2518 mental health calls, with 28 (1.1%) being adverse events...

Implementing a Needs Assessment to Advance Health Equity in Overdose Prevention and Surveillance Initiatives
CONCLUSION: Findings suggest that gaps remain in programmatic policies and principles to address inequities in overdose prevention. Results are being used to identify additional technical assistance opportunities, jurisdictional capacity, and approaches to advance health equity.PMID:38519872 | DOI:10.1177/00333549241239905 (Source: Public Health Reports)

Regional differences in fatal drug overdose deaths among Black and White individuals in the United States, 2012-2021
CONCLUSIONS AND SCIENTIFIC SIGNIFICANCE: The findings indicate that the Black/White overdose mortality gap changed after the COVID-19 pandemic across all regions and age cohorts, with state and regional variations in magnitude. Behavioral interventions and policies to curb drug overdose deaths among populations most impacted should consider regional, sex, and age-related differences.PMID:38520669 | DOI:10.1111/ajad.13536 (Source: American Journal on Addictions)

"Deaths of despair" over the business cycle: New estimates from a shift-share instrumental variables approach
This study presents new evidence of the effects of short-term economic fluctuations on suicide, fatal drug overdose, and alcohol-related mortality among working-age adults in the United States from 2003-2017. Using a shift-share instrumental variables approach, I find that a one percentage point increase in the aggregate employment rate decreases current-year non-drug suicides by 1.7 percent. These protective effects are concentrated among working-age men and likely reflect a combination of individual labor market experiences as well as the indirect effects of local economic growth. I find no consistent evidence that short...

Jail Characteristics and Availability of Opioid Treatment Services: Results from a Nationally Representative Survey
AbstractThe current wave of the opioid epidemic has contributed to a record number of drug-related overdoses and a significant proportion of people who experience opioid use disorder are admitted to local jails. These correctional facilities serve as the principal entry point to the criminal justice system as nearly every person who is taken into custody is admitted to a local detention center. Although jails are recognized as primary intervention points for people who may require treatment for opioid use disorder, services in these facilities remain deficient. The absence of jail-based treatment has become a pressing conc...
