People with complicated pregnancies may suffer health problems, die early
Preterm births are a well-known hazard for babies—who can require months and sometimes years of extra care—but far less attention is paid to the people who deliver them. Now, a new analysis of more than 2 million pregnancies over 4 decades finds those parents need consideration, too: Even years later, people who experienced some common pregnancy complications had a higher risk of death. “We are starting to understand that pregnancy complications … are windows into longer term complications,” says Cynthia Gyamfi-Bannerman, a maternal fetal medicine specialist at the University of California San Diego who was...

Deep neural network (DNN) modelling for prediction of the mode of delivery
One of the factors that worry obstetricians the most is the method of delivery. Overall, vaginal birth is the most typical method of childbirth, followed by vacuum extraction, forceps delivery, and emergency caesarean sections [1]. Each of these birthing scenarios has advantages and disadvantages, and the style of delivery chosen might not be appropriate given the mother's personality. The potential risks of using the incorrect delivery method include fetal termination, heavy bleeding, respiratory issues for the infant, and others. A simulation study to assess the potential benefits of MRI-based fetal weight estimation as a second-line test for suspected macrosomia
Macrosomia, defined as a birth weight (BW) above 4000 or 4500  g [1,2], is associated with adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. Maternal complications include increased rates of birth operative vaginal delivery or cesarean delivery (CD) due to abnormal first and second stage stages of labor, extensive genital tract lacerations, and postpartum hemorrhage. Potential neonatal complications include shoulder dystocia (SD), birth trauma, neonatal hypoglycemia, and other long-term metabolic disorders [3]. Analysis of the obstetrician's posture and movements during a simulated forceps delivery
The objective of this study was to identify and qualify, by means of a three-dimensional kinematic analysis, the postures and movements of obstetricians during a simulated forceps birth, and then to study the ... (Source: BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth)

Uterine contractile activity and neonatal outcome – A blind analysis of a randomized controlled trial cohort
ConclusionsIncreasing intrauterine pressure impairs umbilical artery pH especially among parturients with suspected chorioamnionitis. Fetuses in pregnancies affected by chorioamnionitis, hypertensive or diabetic disorders are more vulnerable to high intrauterine pressure. (Source: Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica)

Understanding demographic and epidemiologic characteristics of hospitalized immigrant female patients: a retrospective observational study
Acta Clin Croat. 2023 Aug;62(2):323-329. doi: 10.20471/acc.2023.62.02.10.ABSTRACTPrecise epidemiologic and demographic characteristics of immigrant women admitted to gynecology or obstetrics departments are rarely explored. The aim of this retrospective observational study was to analyze the epidemiologic and demographic characteristics of immigrant female patients hospitalized between 2012 and 2017 in one maternity hospital in south-west Slovenia. Clinical data retrieved from hospital electronic information system were used to analyze these characteristics. In the mentioned period, 605 immigrant women were hospitalized, m...
