Supplements with potential to prevent Alzheimer's affect blood, but less so the brain
(Keck School of Medicine of USC) A small clinical trial from USC suggests that higher doses of omega-3 supplements may be needed in order to prevent or slow cognitive decline from Alzheimer's disease, because dramatic increases in blood levels of omega-3s are accompanied by far smaller increases within the brain. Among participants who carry a specific mutation that heightens risk for Alzheimer's, taking the supplements raised levels of a key fatty acid far less compared to those without the mutation. COVID-19: Reset Food Systems Now for a Better Future
By Cecilia RussellMILAN, Italy, Jun 4 2020 (IPS) The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the inherent fragility of food systems, Marta Antonelli told an international video conference organised by the Barilla Center for Food Nutrition (BCFN). However, she said, it also offered an opportunity to reset the way food is produced, distributed and consumed. The pandemic disrupted the food system, triggering food insecurity and resulted in sharp increases in the cost of food – up to 10 per cent in sub-Saharan Africa. Jobs were lost, children who received one meal a day at school lost access to this source of nutrition, and ...

Boosts in serum EPA levels from prescription fish oil drive heart benefits
(American College of Cardiology) Higher levels of the omega-3 fatty acid eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) found in the blood--and not a decrease in triglyceride levels as originally thought--appear to explain the striking reductions in cardiovascular events and deaths seen among people taking 4 grams daily of the prescription fish oil, icosapent ethyl, according to findings from a REDUCE-IT substudy presented at the American College of Cardiology's Annual Scientific Session Together with World Congress of Cardiology (ACC.20/WCC).
