Substitution of dietary monounsaturated fatty acids from olive oil for saturated fatty acids from lard increases LDL apolipoprotein B-100 fractional catabolic rate in subjects with dyslipidemia associated with insulin resistance: a randomized controlled trial
CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that substituting dietary MUFAs for SFAs decreases LDL-C levels and LDL PS by increasing LDL apoB-100 FCR and results in an overall improved plasma lipidomic profile in individuals with IR-induced lipidemia.TRIAL REGISTRATION: clinicaltrials.gov NCT03872349.PMID:38518848 | DOI:10.1016/j.ajcnut.2024.03.015 (Source: The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition)

Nonsurgical Treatment of Periodontitis in Menopausal Patients: A Randomized Control Trial
CONCLUSIONS: Menopausal women with periodontitis who take omega-3 fatty acid supplements in addition to SRP have better oral health. Significant improvements in clinical indicators and a notable decrease in AST levels within the GCF were observed. However, further research with larger cohorts and extended duration is needed to validate these findings and explain potential mechanisms. This trial is registered with NCT06254118.PMID:38510979 | PMC:PMC10954359 | DOI:10.1155/2024/6997142 (Source: Biomed Res)

Olive oil loaded alginate milliparticle with chitosan coating: fabrication and evaluation
Ahmad Hadipour, Zahra Mahmoudi, Saeed Manoochehri, Heshmatollah Ebrahimi-Najafabadi, Zahra Hesari Nutrition & Food Science, Vol. ahead-of-print, No. ahead-of-print, pp.- Particles are of the controlled release delivery systems. Also, topically applied olive oil has a protective effect against ultraviolet B (UVB) exposure. Due to its sensitivity to oxidation, various studies have investigated the production of olive oil particles. The purpose of this study was to use chitosan and sodium alginate as the vehicle polymers for olive oil.The gelation method used to prepare the sodium alginate miliparticles containing olive ...

Telomere length as biomarker of nutritional therapy for prevention of type 2 diabetes mellitus development in patients with coronary heart disease: CORDIOPREV randomised controlled trial
CONCLUSION: Patients with shorter TL presented a higher risk of developing T2DM. This association could be mitigated with a specific dietary pattern, in our case a Mediterranean diet, to prevent T2DM in patients with coronary heart disease.TRIAL REGISTRATION: Clinicaltrials.gov number NCT00924937.PMID:38493287 | DOI:10.1186/s12933-024-02175-5 (Source: Atherosclerosis)

Eco-friendly extraction of antibacterial compounds from enriched olive pomace: a design-of-experiments approach to sustainability
This study aims to develop an eco-friendly extraction method to evaluate the effect of extraction parameters on the recovery of bioactive molecules from enriched olive pomace. The effects were identified based on total phenolic and flavonoid contents and antioxidant activity, employing a design of experimental methodology. The positive and the negative simultaneous effects showed that among the tested enrichments, those incorporating Nigella Sativa, dates, and coffee demonstrated superior results in terms of the measured responses. Furthermore, chromatographic analysis unveiled the existence of intriguing compounds such as...

Molecules, Vol. 29, Pages 1141: Enrichment of Olive Oils with Natural Bioactive Compounds from Aromatic and Medicinal Herbs: Phytochemical Analysis and Antioxidant Potential
E. Lekka Olive oil and herbs, two key components of the Mediterranean diet, are known for their beneficial effects on humans. In our study, we incorporated aromatic and medicinal herbs into local monovarietal olive oils via maceration procedures for enrichment. We identified the herbal-derived ingredients that migrate to olive oils and contribute positively to their total phenolic content and functional properties, such as radical scavenging activity. Thus, we characterized the essential oil composition of the aromatic herbs (GC-MS), and we determined the phenolic content and antioxidant capacity of the additives and ...

Comparison of the effects of monounsaturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids on the lipotoxicity of islets
ConclusionsBoth MUFAs and PUFAs can effectively protect islet β cells from SFA-induced cellular lipotoxicity. In particular, both OA in vitro and OO in vivo showed superior activities on protecting islets function and enhance insulin sensitivity, suggesting that MUFAs might have greater potential for nutritional intervention on diabetes.
