Weekend Recipe: Grass-Fed Beef Bourguignon With Cauliflower Mash
This recipe is rich with goodness and flavor — and is comfort food at its best. The ingredients are simple: Quality grass-fed beef is married together with vegetables and a few glasses of full-bodied red wine. I’ve used carrot puree to thicken the Bourguignon sauce towards the end of cooking, which is a lovely way of thickening sauces without using refined white flours. Don’t overcook your cauliflower. Make sure to chop the ingredients finely before cooking and keep an eye on the cooking time. Blend it when hot, which will result in a creamy, white mash that tastes wonderful. This recipe is from my cookbo...

5 Places Where People Live the Longest and Healthiest Lives
Global life expectancy averages out to 71.4 years. That means, of course, that some parts of the world see much shorter life spans, while others enjoy far greater longevity. Five places, in particular, fall into the latter category. They’re known as Blue Zones—named for the blue circles researchers drew to identify the first one on a map—and they’re home to some of the oldest and healthiest people in the world. Dan Buettner, author of The Blue Zones and The Blue Zones Solution, told TIME why residents of these places live so long—and how you can steal their habits. Sardinia, Italy A l...

Weekend Recipe: A Healthy Carrot Cake
I designed my healthy carrot cake recipe when I opened The Healthy Chef Café in Avalon Beach in Sydney, Australia. It was a hangout for moms, kids, yogis, supermodels and pro surfers — a place where a variety of people could get nourished and feel great. This cake has over one pound of fresh grated carrot, so it’s packed with goodness and fiber. The large amount of carrots in this recipe also helps to keep the cake moist, which is important due to the longer baking time. When making gluten-free cakes, I find ground almonds make a great replacement for the usual white refined flours that you’ll find...

This Type of Non-Dairy Milk is the Healthiest, Study Says
That almond milk latte may be delicious, but a study just published in the Journal of Food Science and Technology suggests that the trendy beverage also has some drawbacks. When researchers compared the nutritional profiles of four popular “alternative” milks, they found that soy milk came out on top—and that almond, rice and coconut “milks” all lacked essential nutrients important for overall health. Plant-based “milks” are often marketed as wholesome and appropriate substitutes for the real thing. To find out if these claims measured up, scientists at McGill University in Canada ...

Weekend Recipe: A Gluten-Free Apple Cake That Won ’t Last Long
This cake is inspired by my great aunt who was Polish and an incredible baker. She would mix wholesome cakes by hand with a wooden spoon and churn out babka to feed to our Polish family on a regular basis. I would watch her with excitement and help out in the kitchen, making the most spectacular apple cakes that were packed with apples and scented with a hint of vanilla. This recipe is from my latest cookbook Healthy Baking. I like to use Golden Delicious Apples in this recipe, but you can use any kind you prefer. Chop them into smaller pieces, so they cook quicker when baking. This cake is quite moist, so store in an airt...

Keto Diet Last, DASH First In New Diet Rankings
By Sandee LaMotte, CNN (CNN) — If you’re a fan of the “fat-burning” keto diet, you’ll be fired up about its ranking in the 2018 list of best diets from US News and World Report: It’s tied for last, along with the relatively unknown Dukan diet. Both stress eating a ton of protein and minimal carbs, putting the dieter into “ketosis,” when the body breaks down both ingested and stored body fat into ketones, which it uses as energy. People on such diets often deal with fatigue and light-headedness as they adjust to a lack of carbohydrates. Though the experts on the US News and Wo...
