A Delphi Panel of People With Parkinson's Disease Regarding Responsibility: Toward a Preliminary Taxonomy
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: This study yielded the first consensus among PwPD regarding responsibility in occupations as well as a classification system for charting the complexity of responsibility in occupations. The occupation list we have created can be beneficial to health care professionals when providing interventions or conducting outcome assessments. Plain-Language Summary: When planning interventions for patients with Parkinson's disease, it can be helpful for clinicians to be aware of patients' perspectives regarding their sense of responsibility to perform occupations. The use of a systematic sequence of challen...

Factors Influencing Real-World Use of the More-Affected Upper Limb After Stroke: A Scoping Review
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Existing interventions primarily focus on upper limb impairments and motor ability. Our findings suggest that interventions should also incorporate other factors: task type (unilateral vs. bilateral), hand dominance, self-efficacy, and perception of more-affected limb use as active ingredients in improving real-world use of the more-affected upper limb poststroke. We also provide recommendations to use behavioral activation theory in designing an occupation-focused intervention to augment self-efficacy and confidence in use of the more-affected upper limb in daily occupations. Plain-Language Summ...

Profile of paediatric occupational therapy practice in Eastern Mediterranean countries
CONCLUSION: Paediatric occupational therapists are usually exposed to specific age groups and conditions. However, a lack of knowledge practice in some areas and challenges in others exist.SIGNIFICANCE: Within the EM region, knowledge regarding therapists' practices is lacking. Actions should be taken to improve current practice and meet the current needs of clients, and utilise evidence-based practices.PMID:38631391 | DOI:10.1080/11038128.2024.2342536 (Source: Scandinavian Journal of Occupational Therapy)

Phronesis: Recognising a neglected dimension of knowledge within occupational therapy research
CONCLUSION: There is a need for a greater recognition of phronesis as a dimension of knowledge within all types of research, and within the discipline. By not recognising phronesis as a legitimate form of knowledge, the discipline perpetuates a superiority of knowledge from episteme that dominates our ways of learning about the world around us and where the type of knowledge gleaned from phronesis is consequently marginalised.PMID:38630858 | DOI:10.1080/11038128.2024.2341782 (Source: Scandinavian Journal of Occupational Therapy)

Using GPS and Self-Report Data to Examine the Relationship Between Community Mobility and Community Participation Among Autistic Young Adults
CONCLUSION: Health policymakers and providers should consider community mobility as a factor that can affect community participation in autistic individuals. Plain-Language Summary: Lower levels of community participation among autistic young adults affect health outcomes and overall quality of life. Community mobility is often a barrier to community participation. An understanding of the relationship between community mobility and community participation can lead to occupational therapists tailoring specific interventions and policies that support autistic young adults to engage in important life activities within the com...

The Text-Picture Integration Scale for Perspectives on Mental Illness: Development and Validation
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Preliminary analyses support that the Text-Picture Integration Scale is a stable and effective rating scale to determine public perspectives on mental illness and is appropriate for evaluating destigmatization efforts. Plain-Language Summary: The study findings support the use of the Text-Picture Integration Scale as a stable and effective rating scale to determine public perspectives on mental illness. The scale is also appropriate for evaluating ways to address the stigmas that people associate with mental illness, which pose challenges for people in recovery. Occupational therapists can levera...

Effect of Depression Interventions in Patients Undergoing Total Joint Arthroplasty Without a Formal Diagnosis of Depression: A Systematic Review
CONCLUSIONS: Overall, a wide range of interventions aimed at psychological optimization of patients undergoing TJA can improve depressive symptoms, pain, and function, even in the absence of a formal diagnosis of depression. Specifically, cognitive-based psychotherapy and enhanced perioperative support had the best evidence. Routine pharmacotherapy plays a limited role, if any, in the care of TJA. Additional efforts to develop pragmatic, evidence-based, and reproducible interventions are warranted to continue to optimize outcomes in TJA patients.PMID:38626430 | DOI:10.5435/JAAOS-D-23-01130 (Source: The Journal of the Ameri...

Occupational experiences and their importance for young peoples' mental health
CONCLUSIONS: Young peoples' occupational experiences shape their mental health in several ways: they serve as coping strategies, as a means to experience joy and accomplishment, and as a source of routines and opportunities for relaxation. We suggest that health-promoting initiatives for young people would strongly benefit from the inclusion of an occupational perspective.PMID:38626736 | DOI:10.1080/11038128.2024.2341779 (Source: Scandinavian Journal of Occupational Therapy)

Effectiveness of Comprehensive Environmental Support for Community-Dwelling Older Adults: A Single-Blind Randomized Controlled Trial
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Occupational therapy-based comprehensive environmental support based on CEQ scores was effective, resulting in moderate improvements in health-related quality of life among community-dwelling older adults. Plain-Language Summary: Older adults experience a decline in physical and mental functions along with changes in social relationships. These problems make it challenging for older adults to perform valuable occupations, thus reducing their quality of life. This study demonstrated that occupational therapy based on the Comprehensive Environmental Questionnaire for older adults can improve health...

Occupational therapy practitioners' experiences with interprofessional collaborative practice
This study evaluated occupational therapists in the United States experiences of IPCP with additional inquiry into which healthcare professionals occupational therapy practitioners interact with and how they engage in collaboration, during IPCP. An exploratory cross-sectional study was conducted using an online survey; 142 occupational therapy practitioners responded. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive and bivariate analyses; open-ended responses underwent consensual qualitative analysis. Participants reported most often engaging in IPCP with physical therapists, speech-language pathologists, nurses, physici...
