Pay rise above 2% for GPNs risks ‘further pressure’ on NHS budget
NHS England has warned against a pay increase above 2% for general practice nurses (GPNs) and other practice staff this year. In its evidence to the Review Body on Doctors’ and Dentists Remuneration (DDRB), NHS England advised that any pay awards higher than the funding settlement from the Treasury will ‘put further pressure’ on the... Suffering Shouldn ’ t Be a Normal Part of Womanhood
One of the most important lessons medical schools teach is one my mom mastered as a teenager left to fill her own mother’s shoes: how to figure out who is really sick and needs immediate attention and who can wait (or what we in the medical field call “triage”). Nothing I learned in med school or since has contradicted what I learned at Bertha’s knee. At the time, the practice of medicine was rudimentary—and that’s putting it nicely. So, the diagnoses typically made at home were probably not that different from those of a bona fide doctor. The more serious common ailments were things ...

The Relentless Cost of Chronic Diseases
At first, my legs buckled. Then I started nearly fainting and was struck by fierce jaw, neck, and back pain—six unhappy faces-worth on the scale.  Just as quickly, as one tends to do, I created narratives to explain these sudden symptoms. That one glass of wine had done me in. The steamy weather led my knees to wobble. It was the aftermath of a concussion I got after I fell in a hole in the sidewalk. It was from when I hurt my neck when I was thrown down on a subway platform by a man with low spatial awareness and somewhere to be. [time-brightcove not-tgx=”true”] It turned out I was fainting beca...

Barriers for disabled staff in the health service need to be lowered
Annette Heslop (pictured above) for the nursing and midwifery occupational group moved a motion on ensuring reasonable adjustments for healthcare students on clinical placements. Equality law gives disabled workers the right to reasonable adjustments where they experience substantial disadvantage. However, as students are not classed as employees, some struggle on clinical placements to access reasonable adjustments. Ms Heslop said that, in such a situation, it was no surprise that students dropped out. “We must ensure that all students are supported on their placements,” she concluded. In a related motion, the nationa...

UNISON will continue to strengthen the Race for Equality campaign
In a motion on equipping branches to tackle race discrimination in the NHS, the health service group executive stressed that UNISON is continuing to strengthen its Race for Equality campaign that was a centrepiece to the union’s Year of Black Workers in 2023. Maria Alberts for the service group executive told delegates: “Racism does exist in the NHS”. She cited Too Hot to Handle, a report that “shines a light” on the lack of safe and effective means to report and then tackle problems, with, for instance, 63% of Black workers surveyed saying that they were subjected to greater scrutiny than white colleagues. Deleg...
