Advances in Molecular Regulation of Prostate Cancer Cells by Top Natural Products of Malaysia
We present a review of the molecular targets driving current drug discovery to fight this disease. Moreover, the preventable nature of most PCa cases represents an opportunity for phytochemicals as chemopreventive when adequately integrated into nutritional interventions. With a renovated interest in natural remedies as a commodity and their essential role in cancer drug discovery, Malaysia is looking towards capitalizing on its mega biodiversity, which includes the oldest rainforest in the world and an estimated 1200 medicinal plants. We here explore whether the list of top Malay plants prioritized by the Malaysian govern...

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 313: Effects of Sonication and Thermal Pasteurization on the Nutritional, Antioxidant, and Microbial Properties of Noni Juice
This study evaluated the effects of different sonication durations (20, 40, and 60 min) and thermal pasteurization on the nutritional, antioxidant, and microbial properties of noni juice. Fresh noni juice served as the control. The main organic acids detected were malic (57.54–89.31 mg/100 mL) and ascorbic (17.15–31.55 mg/100 mL) acids. Compared with the fresh sample, the concentrations of these compounds were significantly improved (p < 0.05) in the 60 min sonicated sample but reduced (p < 0.05) in the pasteurized sample. Moreover, sonication for 60 min resulted in increme...

Molecules, Vol. 27, Pages 8705: In Vitro and In Silico Pharmacological and Cosmeceutical Potential of Ten Essential Oils from Aromatic Medicinal Plants from the Mascarene Islands
In this study, 10 essential oils (EOs), from nine plants (Cinnamomum camphora, Curcuma longa, Citrus aurantium, Morinda citrifolia, Petroselinum crispum, Plectranthus amboinicus, Pittosporum senacia, Syzygium coriaceum, and Syzygium samarangense) were assessed for their antimicrobial, antiaging and antiproliferative properties. While only S. coriaceum, P. amboinicus (MIC: 0.50 mg/mL) and M. citrifolia (MIC: 2 mg/mL) EOs showed activity against Cutibacterium acnes, all EOs except S. samarangense EO demonstrated activity against Mycobacterium smegmatis (MIC: 0.125–0.50 mg/mL). The EOs were either fungistatic or...

Genes, Vol. 13, Pages 1993: RNA-Seq and Iso-Seq Reveal the Important Role of COMT and CCoAOMT Genes in Accumulation of Scopoletin in Noni (Morinda citrifolia)
Tian Wu Scopoletin, the main component of clinical drugs and the functional component of health products, is highly abundant in noni fruit (Morinda citrifolia). Multiple enzyme genes regulate scopoletin accumulation. In the present study, differentially expressed genes of noni were analyzed by RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) and the full-length genes by isoform-sequencing (Iso-Seq) to find the critical genes in the scopoletin accumulation mechanism pathway. A total of 32,682 full-length nonchimeric reads (FLNC) were obtained, out of which 16,620 non-redundant transcripts were validated. Based on KEGG (Kyoto Enc...

Potential effects of noni (Morinda citrifolia L.) fruits extract against obsessive-compulsive disorder in marble burying and nestlet shredding behavior mice models
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic and complex psychiatric disorder that usually includes both obsessions and compulsions. Morinda citrifolia L. (Noni) is a functional food and it is a well-known plant due to its potential therapeutic effects on human health in many disorders including neurological and neurodegenerative diseases. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the potential effect of M. citrifolia fruits extract (MCFE) against obsessive-compulsive disorder using the marble burying and nestlet shredding behavior mice models. In addition, brain neurotransmitters such as dopamine (DA), serotonin and n...

D-mannose for preventing and treating urinary tract infections
CONCLUSIONS: There is currently little to no evidence to support or refute the use of D-mannose to prevent or treat UTIs in all populations. This review highlights the severe lack of high-quality RCTs testing the efficacy of D-mannose for UTIs in any population. Despite UTIs being one of the most common adult infections (affecting 50% of women at least once in their lifetime) and the growing global antimicrobial resistance, we found very few studies that adequately test this alternative treatment. Future research in this field requires, in the first instance, a single adequately powered RCT comparing D-mannose with placebo...

Bisabolane-type sesquiterpenoids with potential anti-inflammatory and anti-HIV activities from the stems and leaves of < em > Morinda citrifolia < /em >
Nat Prod Res. 2022 Aug 17:1-8. doi: 10.1080/14786419.2022.2112577. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe phytochemical study on the stems and leaves of Morinda citrifolia L. resulted in the isolation of a new naturally occurring bisabolane-type sesquiterpenoid, morincitrinoid A (1), together with five known analogues (2-6). The chemical structure of 1 was elucidated by comprehensive spectral analyses. The known compounds 2-6 were identified by comparing their spectral data with those reported in the literature, which were isolated from M. citrifolia for the first time. In addition, the anti-inflammatory and anti-HIV activities...
