European Glaucoma Society - A guide on surgical innovation for glaucoma
Br J Ophthalmol. 2023 Dec 21;107(Suppl 1):1-114. doi: 10.1136/bjophthalmol-2023-egsguidelines.ABSTRACTPROLOGUE: Glaucoma surgery has been, for many decades now, dominated by the universal gold standard which is trabeculectomy augmented with antimetabolites. Tubes also came into the scene to complement what we use to call conventional or traditional glaucoma surgery. More recently we experienced a changing glaucoma surgery environment with the "advent" of what we have become used to calling Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS). What is the unmet need, what is the gap that these newcomers aim to fill? Hippocrates taugh...

2331 A novel approach to research delivery in the emergency department
Conclusion A three month pilot from January 2022-March 2022. One research naive ED Health Care Assistant was appointed to the role of ED Research Practitioner. Training was performed by the ED Consultant Lead for Research, which included gaining GCP certification, NIHR consent modules, and a two week period of shadowing and sign off prior to working independently. Weekly meetings were held to trouble shoot. Over a period of 5 weeks at average 37.5hrs a week of independent practice, the ED Research Practitioner screened and recruited a total of 180 patients into 5 ED studies. None of the studies were using Investigative Med...

2106 Salbutamol for analgesia in renal colic
Conclusion Formal statistical analysis of the results is pending, but provisional results suggest a trend towards benefit that does not reach the pre-determined levels of clinical or statistical significance. Full analysis will be available in time for the conference. Abstract 2106 Figure 1 (Source: Emergency Medicine Journal)

An SMS and animated video intervention to increase uptake of breast cancer screening: a randomised controlled trial
This study tested the impact of a behavioural science-informed reminder SMS, and animated video intervention on screening uptake.METHODS: This three-armed randomised controlled trial took place in two screening services in London (each service operated across a range of static sites such as hospitals, and mobile sites). We included participants who were registered with GP as female, aged 50-70 years, and not screened in the past 3 years. We excluded those who had opted out of screening messages or were in care. Participants were assigned into three groups via the final two digits of their NHS number (ratio 34:33:33): contr...

One versus three weeks hypofractionated whole breast radiotherapy for early breast cancer treatment: the FAST-Forward phase III RCT
Health Technol Assess. 2023 Nov;27(25):1-176. doi: 10.3310/WWBF1044.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: FAST-Forward aimed to identify a 5-fraction schedule of adjuvant radiotherapy delivered in 1 week that was non-inferior in terms of local cancer control and as safe as the standard 15-fraction regimen after primary surgery for early breast cancer. Published acute toxicity and 5-year results are presented here with other aspects of the trial.DESIGN: Multicentre phase III non-inferiority trial. Patients with invasive carcinoma of the breast (pT1-3pN0-1M0) after breast conservation surgery or mastectomy randomised (1 : 1 : 1) to 40 Gy in 1...

Efficacy and safety of baricitinib or ravulizumab in adult patients with severe COVID-19 (TACTIC-R): a randomised, parallel-arm, open-label, phase 4 trial
Lancet Respir Med. 2023 Nov 14:S2213-2600(23)00376-4. doi: 10.1016/S2213-2600(23)00376-4. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: From early in the COVID-19 pandemic, evidence suggested a role for cytokine dysregulation and complement activation in severe disease. In the TACTIC-R trial, we evaluated the efficacy and safety of baricitinib, an inhibitor of Janus kinase 1 (JAK1) and JAK2, and ravulizumab, a monoclonal inhibitor of complement C5 activation, as an adjunct to standard of care for the treatment of adult patients hospitalised with COVID-19.METHODS: TACTIC-R was a phase 4, randomised, parallel-arm, open-label pla...

Experience of an NIHR Clinical Lectureship (medical/dental) and the determining factors for a clinical academic career post lectureship: a mixed-method evaluation
Conclusions The CL is a valued element of the Integrated Academic Pathway. By addressing issues around later postdoctoral progression opportunities, responding to challenges experienced by CLs, and by understanding the factors identified in this study associated with clinical academic progression, it should be possible to increase the proportion of CLs that become fully independent clinical academic research leaders. Participants 1226 NIHR CLs active or completed on the award between 2006 and 2020. (Source: BMJ Open)

Correction of symbrachydactyly: a systematic review of surgical options
This study aims to systematically review the surgical management options for symbrachydactyly and compare functional and aesthetic outcomes. The review was performed according to the PRISMA guidelines. Literature was systematically assessed searching the Cochrane Library, PubMed, Embase, and PROSPERO databases up to January 1, 2023. Studies were identified using synonyms for ‘symbrachydactyly’ and ‘treatment’. Inclusion criteria were the report of outcomes after surgical treatment of symbrachydactyly in humans. Studies were excluded if they were written in another language than English, German, or French. Case repor...

1 Can we prevent dementia?
Dr Mukadam completed her Medical Sciences undergraduate degree at Cambridge University with an intercalated BA in Experimental Psychology. She then studied Clinical Medicine at the University of Oxford and trained in general medicine and surgery at Oxford and Newcastle. She completed her psychiatric training on the Royal Free Psychiatric Training rotation and obtained her CCT in Old Age Psychiatry in 2013. Dr Mukadam obtained a doctoral research training fellowship from the NIHR to design and test an intervention to encourage South Asian people to seek help earlier for dementia. During her PhD, Dr Mukadam has collaborated ...
