Antimicrobial secondary metabolites and antioxidant activities of fungal endophytes associated with < em > Ziziphus spina-christi < /em > (L.) Desf. (Nabq) leaves
This study would be one of the first reports to measure the antioxidant activity of Z. spina-christi (L.) Desf. endophytic fungi. Therefore, these isolated endophytic fungi can provide additional information for medicinal sources of natural antioxidants and antimicrobial agents.PMID:38630967 | DOI:10.1080/14786419.2024.2340761 (Source: Natural Product Research)

Molecules, Vol. 29, Pages 1829: Phytochemical Analysis, Antimicrobial Screening and In Vitro Pharmacological Activity of Artemisia vestita Leaf Extract
jay Yadav Artemisia vestita Wall. Ex Besser is a folklore medicinal plant that belongs to Asteraceae family and a treasure trove of drugs. The aim of this research study was to investigate the phytoconstituents, antimicrobial activity, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cytotoxicity and wound healing potential of A. vestita leaf extract (ALE). Phytochemical analysis of the ALE was carried out by Soxhlet extraction and GCMS (gas chromatography–mass spectrometry) analysis. Antimicrobial activity was performed by the agar well diffusion method against selected bacterial and fungal strains. Free radical scavengi...

Effect of < em > Aspergillus niger < /em > prolyl endopeptidase in patients with celiac disease on a long-term gluten-free diet
CONCLUSION: This exploratory study conducted in a real-life setting revealed high adherence to the GFD. The AN-PEP treatment did not significantly reduce the overall GIP stool concentration. However, given the observation of a significantly lower prevalence of patients with severe symptoms in the AN-PEP arm, further clinical research is warranted.PMID:38617446 | PMC:PMC11008412 | DOI:10.3748/wjg.v30.i11.1545 (Source: World Journal of Gastroenterology)

Characterization and identification of long-chain hydrocarbon-degrading bacterial communities in long-term chronically polluted soil in Ogoniland: an integrated approach using culture-dependent and independent methods
This study aimed to investigate the long-chain hydrocarbon-degrading bacterial communities within long-term chronically polluted soil in Ogoniland, by utilizing both traditional cultivation methods and modern culture-independent techniques. Results revealed that surface-polluted soil (SPS) and subsurface soil (SPSS) exhibit significantly higher total organic carbon (TOC) ranging from 5.64 to 5.06% and total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) levels ranging from 36,775 ppm to 14,087 ppm, compared to unpolluted soil (UPS) with 1.97% TOC and 479 ppm TPH, respectively. Analysis of carbon chain lengths reveals the prevalence of longe...

Colonial-driven extinction of the blue antelope despite genomic adaptation to low population size
Curr Biol. 2024 Apr 9:S0960-9822(24)00391-9. doi: 10.1016/j.cub.2024.03.051. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLow genomic diversity is generally indicative of small population size and is considered detrimental by decreasing long-term adaptability.1,2,3,4,5,6 Moreover, small population size may promote gene flow with congeners and outbreeding depression.7,8,9,10,11,12,13 Here, we examine the connection between habitat availability, effective population size (Ne), and extinction by generating a 40× nuclear genome from the extinct blue antelope (Hippotragus leucophaeus). Historically endemic to the relatively small Cape Floris...

News at a glance: Jailed conservationists freed, physics titan dies, and diversity in anatomical illustrations
ASTRONOMY Scientists flock to the eclipse Tens of millions in North America turned their specially protected eyes to the skies on 8 April for several minutes of darkness when the Moon blocked the disk of the Sun, casting a shadow across Mexico, 15 U.S. states, and Canada. Researchers and citizen scientists seized the opportunity to study the corona—the wispy, outer layer of the Sun’s atmosphere—from the ground and in eclipse-chasing aircraft. They expected to see loops of plasma and other solar flares because the eclipse coincided with solar maximum, a period of high magnetic activity. Research...
