8 December 2014 – The total number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Iraq has reached 2.1 million people, with 40% of those displaced in the Kurdistan region of Iraq. More than 450 000 displaced individuals reside in Duhok governorate’s Sumel, Zakho, Duhok and Amedi districts, accounting for 24% of the overall IDP caseload. Many displaced persons are in hard-to-reach and inaccessible areas with limited access to health care services. Libya crisis situation update
WHO has provided much needed surgical supplies and trauma kits30 November 2014 – A United Nations (UN) interagency assessment mission took place from 17 to 22 October to assess the operational environment in Tripoli. Health impact of the crisis in the Syrian Arab Republic
The Syria crisis was designated a Grade 3 emergency by WHO and a Level 3 emergency by the IASC in 2013, reflecting the magnitude and scale of the emergency. More than 80 000 people are estimated to have died and a further 400 000 injured as a result of the crisis as of June 2013 [1]. The crisis has affected all 14 governorates in the Syrian Arab Republic, with the United Nations estimating that 6.8 million people were in need of assistance as of August 2013, including 4.25 million internally displaced persons. Making prevention pay
A joint report from the World Bank and the United Nations offers governments a number of measures to prevent death, destruction, financial loss and higher health care costs as a result of natural disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes and flooding. The 250-page report, titled "Natural hazards, unnatural disasters: the economics of effective prevention", was released in Washington and directly targets the world's finance ministers by presenting evidence for countries to reduce their vulnerability to natural hazards so that they can develop their economies in a sustainable and cost-effective way.
