Brain 'Drowns' in Its Own Fluid after a Stroke
Cerebral edema, swelling that occurs in the brain, is a severe and potentially fatal complication of stroke. New research, which was conducted in mice and appears in the journal Science, shows for the first time that the glymphatic system – normally associated with the beneficial task of waste removal – goes awry during a stroke and floods the brain, triggering edema and drowning brain cells. Haelen began her career as a registered nurse at Highland Hospital on January 14, 1960, after graduating from the Highland Hospital School of Nursing. Haelen has cared for patients in various roles, including staff nurse, head nurse and nurse supervisor. Wellness that Works
A study of the UR Medicine Employee Wellness program published in the Journal of Population Health Management found that nearly 50 percent of participants who were at moderate to very high risk for CVD at the start of the program and participated in the program for at least one year were able to lower their 10-year CVD risk, with nearly one-third improving by an entire risk category.
