Scottish Section Conference 2022: Nutrition, immune function and infectious disease
Nutrition plays a fundamental role in maintaining health and preventing disease. During the COVID pandemic a range of commentaries from scientific journals to social media posts have suggested a role for dietary interventions in protection against either contracting or recovery from infection of this and similar transmissible viruses. The current programme is designed to examine the role of macro- and micronutrient intake and nutritional status on immune function and infectious disease susceptibility. To register for the Scottish Section Conference 2022 online clickhere.Monday, 4 April, 2022 - 09:00 toTuesday, 5 April, 2022...

Fasting and energy restrictions: the impact on metabolic health
Our lives are characterised by repeating cycles in our environment, behaviour and physiology. In particular, with each passing day and night we experience regular transitions between light and dark, wakefulness and sleep, activity and rest - that may or may not be aligned with our daily meal patterns. There are various opportunities to eat or not to eat over the course of each 24-h period, each with the potential to improve or impair metabolic health. This talk will consider the typical series of eating occasions from shortly after waking on one day until shortly before waking on the next. Specifically, we will firstly cons...

NDNS: Diet and physical activity – a follow-up study during COVID-19
The National Diet and Nutrition Survey (NDNS) follow up study, ‘Diet, nutrition and physical activity in 2020 – a follow up study during COVID-19’, was published in September. This webinar will describe the background, methods, findings and limitations of the study which aimed to describe and assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the diet and phy sical activity of people in the UK in 2020. Self-reported diet and physical activity data were collected for around 1,000 adults and children from August to October 2020 and compared with their diet and activity data obtained at the time of their original NDNS rolli...

Irish Section Conference 2022: Impact of Nutrition Science to Human Health: Past Perspectives and Future Directions
Save the date: 15-17 June 2022Modern nutrition science is young: It is less than one century since the first vitamin was isolated in 1926. Nutrition science stands upon research conducted by academia, the private sector, and nongovernmental organisations, often in collaboration across these sectors. Its evidence base is of fundamental importance to the solving of current challenges and complexities, optimising outcomes, and the prevention of harm.In order to remain relevant, nutrition science must address the global challenges, including ensuring nutrition security for all, in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals...

Member-led short conference: Plant-rich dietary patterns and health
Dietary patterns rich in plant foods are associated with improved health and reduced non-communicable disease risk.   Fruit and vegetables (FV) are a cornerstone of healthy dietary recommendations.  FV include a diverse collection of plant foods that vary in their energy, nutrient, and dietary bioactive contents. FV have potential health-promoting effects beyond providing basic human nutrition needs in humans, including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, yet current global intakes of FV are well below recommendations. Given the importance of FV for health, interventions that promote FV intake are warranted.This...

Winter Conference 2021:Obesity and the brain
The increasing prevalence of obesity in the UK and worldwide is one of the greatest public health challenges of our age. Obesity-related chronic diseases can affect all age groups and are a major threat to the ongoing quest for longer healthy life expectancies. Obesity can adversely impact healthy functioning of most systems in the body, but the key to prevention and management lies in the brain. This conference will examine  some of the intricacies and latest research findings from neuroscientists and clinicians within the topic of “Obesity and the brain”.Day one will include talks from neuroscientists from leading r...

SACN report on Lower Carbohydrate Diets for Adults with Type 2 Diabetes
A new report, by the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN) and co-badged with Diabetes UK, has reviewed the evidence on lower carbohydrate for adults with type 2 diabetes. The report compares the effects of lower with higher carbohydrate diets on weight, blood sugar management, blood fats and medication use. The conclusions and recommendations of the report are based on a robust assessment of the evidence from randomised controlled trials.SACN has concluded that:For adults living with type 2 diabetes and overweight or obesity, there are beneficial effects of a lower carbohydrate diet for up to six months for so...

The metabolic and molecular regulation of physical activity and nutrition in skeletal muscle, in relation to ageing
Increases in muscle protein synthesis (MPS) and decreases in muscle protein breakdown (MPB) associated with food-intake are fundamental processes underlying day-to-day skeletal muscle maintenance. Increasing circulatory essential amino acids (EAA) through oral intake/I.V infusions of free-amino acids, or ingestion of dietary proteins, stimulates skeletal muscle anabolism. Yet, crucially, while physical activity enhances anabolic responses to nutrition; inactivity and chronological ageing impair them. It is crucial in the many scenarios of muscle wasting (e.g. cancer, ageing, organ failure, trauma), nutrition/physical activ...
