UKSG announces change of Executive Director
UKSG has announced the appointment of Bev Acreman as Interim Executive Director. Bev replaces Sarah Bull who is moving on to pursue other opportunities. Open access academic books downloaded, discussed and cited far more than traditional books
A report from Springer Nature launched today shows there is a tangible benefit to publishing academic books using immediate, or ‘gold’, open access (OA) models. The research found that such books are:
Downloaded seven times more: On average, there are just under 30,000 chapter downloads per OA book within the first year of publication, which is 7 times more than for the average non-OA book.
Cited 50% more: Citations are on average 50% higher for OA books than for non-OA books, over a four-year period.

Springer Nature blocks access to at least 1,000 articles in China
Springer Nature, which publishes science magazines Nature and Scientific American, said on Wednesday it had pulled access to a small number of articles in China to comply with regulations, adding that it viewed the move as regrettable but necessary.
The decision comes after Britain’s Cambridge University Press (CUP) said in August it had removed from its website in China about 300 papers and book reviews published in the China Quarterly journal, after a request from the Chinese government.

Health Research Board to become first public funder to launch publication platform with F1000
Ireland’s Health Research Board (HRB) is to launch a new publishing platform that will enable HRB–funded researchers to publish all research outputs quickly, in an open and transparent way. HRB Open Research will be the first publication platform operated by F1000 on behalf of a public funder.
All HRB Open Research publication charges will be covered by the HRB and the platform will launch in February 2018.
