Dis(appearance) of an Arachnoid Cyst: A Follow-up Imaging Perspective
Arachnoid cysts (ACs) are cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) –filled sacs that are responsible for 1% of all intracranial lesions. (1)(2) Although the etiology remains unknown, expert consensus suggests that ACs are developmental anomalies/congenital malformations. Patients with a diagnosis of AC are typically asymptomatic, even if the cyst increases in size. (2) There is no consensus about the ideal age to repeat imaging and how long to radiographically monitor asymptomatic children who have an AC. (Source: NeoReviews recent issues)

Diabetic Embryopathies
Diabetic embryopathy is defined as congenital anomalies that are linked to maternal diabetes. The association between diabetes and fetal, neonatal, and long-term complications is well-established. These complications include organ or structural maldevelopment, fetal growth abnormalities, and learning/psychiatric comorbidities. Recent studies have elucidated the pathophysiology behind these conditions and outlined new management approaches. Caudal regression syndrome, also known assacral agenesis, is a well-known but less described complication of maternal diabetes. The purpose of this review is to summarize existing resear...

Research in the Delivery Room: Can You Tell Me It ’s Evolution?
Many of the recommendations for newborn care in the delivery room (DR) are based on retrospective observational studies, preclinical studies of mannequins or animal models, and expert opinion. Conducting DR research is challenging. Many deliveries occur in fraught circumstances with little prior warning, making it difficult to get prospective consent from parents and buy-in from clinicians. Many DR interventions are difficult to mask for the purpose of a clinical trial and it is not easy to identify appropriate outcomes for studies that are sufficiently "short-term" that they are likely to be influenced by the intervention...

Appropriate Management of the Nonvigorous Meconium-Stained Newborn Meconium
Before 2015, major changes in Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) recommendations not supporting previously endorsed antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum interventions to prevent meconium aspiration syndrome were based on adequately powered multicenter randomized controlled trials. The 2015 and 2020 American Heart Association guidelines and 7th and 8th edition of NRP suggest not performing routine intubation and tracheal suctioning of nonvigorous meconium-stained newborns. However, this was given as a weak recommendation with low-certainty evidence. The purpose of this review is to summarize the evidence and explore the...

Updates for the Neonatal Resuscitation Program and Resuscitation Guidelines
Although most newborns require no assistance to successfully transition to extrauterine life, the large number of births each year and limited ability to predict which newborns will need assistance means that skilled clinicians must be prepared to respond quickly and efficiently for every birth. A successful outcome is dependent on a rapid response from skilled staff who have mastered the cognitive, technical, and behavioral skills of neonatal resuscitation. Since its release in 1987, over 4.5 million clinicians have been trained by the American Heart Association and American Academy of Pediatrics Neonatal Resuscitation Pr...

Ethical Considerations in Neonatal Research
Children are considered a vulnerable population and have traditionally been excluded from research studies. This exclusion of children in general, and neonates in particular, from clinical research hampers the development of safe and effective therapies in this population. However, research involving children (including infants) is essential to guide therapy and optimize care. Neonatal research is complex, time intensive, difficult and expensive to conduct, and raises some unique ethical considerations. The complexity of research in this population is highlighted by the fear of causing harm to fragile sick infants which ha...
