Scientists are developing a low cost, rapid diagnostic sensor test which aims to show the susceptibility of bacteria to antibiotics within 45 minutes. NHS laboratory testing of samples can take up to two days and the new test aims to allow doctors to be able to prescribe the correct antibiotic to a patient for an infection more quickly. New bacterial strain discovered in England and Wales linked to scarlet fever, sore throat and sepsis
A team of scientists led by Imperial College London have discovered a new strain of group A streptococcus bacteria in 2016. Group A streptococcus (or Strep A) is known to cause scarlet fever, throat infections and– in very rare cases– invasive disease, where the bacterium enters the bloodstream or tissue and can trigger sepsis and toxic shock. MRC UK Brain Banks Network enhances human tissue database
The UK Brain Banks Network (UKBBN), an initiative led by UKRI’s Medical Research Council, has enhanced its human brain tissue database, a web-based interface that enables researchers to access details of tissue samples from across the network. The database now includes searchable genomic data which allows tissue samples to be selected on the basis of genetic risk, as well as clinical and pathological findings.
