Targeted training leads to significant increase in the delivery of alcohol interventions in primary care, new study shows
New research published today (8 February) shows a marked increase in the delivery of alcohol brief interventions in primary care settings where nurse mentors are specifically trained, bringing significant benefits to those at risk of alcohol harm. The research, funded by Alcohol Research UK and conducted by Substance Misuse Management Good Practice (SMMGP), highlights the key role that nurse mentors can play in leading the implementation of alcohol brief interventions. By offering brief advice to those at risk, clinicians are able to advise patients on effective strategies to reduce their drinking. Key findings from the st...

Supporting nurse mentors to reduce the barriers to implementing alcohol Interventions and Brief Advice (IBA) in primary care
Conclusion This project indicates that by supporting nurse mentors in leading on the implementation of IBA there is potential for reducing alcohol-related harm within the existing resources of the surgery. This could support primary care in the practical implementation of an evidence based cost effective intervention which has experienced patchy uptake. A systematic review of alcohol interventions for people living with and beyond cancer
Conclusion This review highlights there is a lack of interventions which have a specific focus on reducing how much alcohol people are drinking following a diagnosis for cancer.  Alcohol use can increase the risk of secondary or recurrent cancer, especially in people who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, and head and neck cancers. Therefore, there is a need for more research to explore the potential for interventions to encourage people who have been diagnosed with cancer to drink less alcohol, which can reduce this risk. A review of alcohol media literacy interventions and potential applications for a UK context
Conclusion Alcohol media literacy interventions aid development of key critical analysis skills in young people and have potential applications in a UK context. Evidence suggests that the concept of advertising exposure underpinning alcohol media literacy interventions may benefit from expansion to incorporate broader types of exposure to alcohol marketing and promotion cited by participants. Testing inclusion of different forms of media as intervention components is recommended and will arguably still be amenable to the critical appraisal skills taught in media literacy (Jolls and Wilson, 2014). Although evidence suggests...

Public involvement in alcohol research
Our new new report on public involvement in alcohol research is now available. The report sets out some of the key principles behind greater public involvement in our field. It also explores the key challenges and describes how we feel researchers might better engage with the public in future. The full report is available here. We hope it is of interest to everyone working in alcohol research, but should be of particular use to anyone applying to our current Research Innovation Grants programme. Accessibility and suitability of residential alcohol treatment for older adults
Conclusion A person’s access to rehab should be based on their individual condition, circumstances and ability to benefit, not assumptions based on their age.  Intergenerational rehabs can work well for some older adults provided they are responsive to age-related needs.  However, some older-adults may benefit from being grouped with residents of a similar age. Majority of residential alcohol treatment centres unfairly excluding older adults, new study warns
New research published today (20 November) shows 1three out of four residential alcohol treatment facilities (rehabs) in England are failing older adults on the basis of arbitrary age limits which prevent them from accessing specialist rehab support. The study, which is being debated at a panel discussion at the House of Lords on Tuesday, 21 November, is being published together with a new report by Drink Wise, Age Well which shows deep and widespread ageism across the whole alcohol treatment system in the UK. 2With higher-risk drinking declining across all age groups other than the over 50s and new figures showing alcohol...

Minimum unit pricing in Scotland will make life better for thousands of people, says charity – and calls for Westminster to step up
The Supreme Court in Scotland today (15 November) delivered its judgement that minimum unit pricing (MUP) for alcohol is legal, a step which charity Alcohol Concern says will improve the health and wellbeing of thousands of people. Harmful drinking is the biggest avoidable cause of death for people aged 15-49 in the UK. It also costs the NHS £3.5 billion a year. The decision in Scotland comes after a long and protracted legal challenge led by the Scotch Whisky Association and follows the recent announcement by the Welsh Government on its plans to introduce minimum alcohol pricing in Wales. Alcohol Concern, along with othe...

Blog Post: Supreme Court makes momentous decision on Minimum Unit pricing in Scotland
Today the Supreme Court has ruled that Minimum Unit Pricing (MUP) for alcohol is legal. This is a momentous decision, following five years of legal challenge led by the Scotch Whisky Association. It means that the Scottish Government can now implement MUP and allow a potentially game-changing alcohol policy to finally be introduced. After years of public debate on the merits and politics of MUP, we may lose sight of the basic principle behind it. MUP establishes a minimum price below which a unit of alcohol can be sold. It is not a new tax on alcohol, and – unlike alcohol taxes – it applies equally regardless of the ty...
