Rickets Reminder
The death of a five-month-old baby in the UK last year will hopefully serve as a reminder just how important it can be to have a well planned diet. Missing out on an essential vitamin or mineral can be deadly....Read Full Post (Source: About.com Pediatrics)

Vaccine Preventable Diseases in the Philippines
I read a post recently on a website of someone who stands against vaccines in a so-called vaccine war. In addition to the measles vaccine, the person was asking about rabies. It became a little clearer why when I realized that the poster was from the Philippines, where they have much higher rates of vaccine-preventable diseases than we do in the United States....Read Full Post (Source: About.com Pediatrics)

Evaluating a Fracture - When is it Child Abuse?
"Bone broke, me fix." That's the running joke in medical school about orthopedic surgeons. Of course, there is a lot more to treating broken bones than that, especially when a suspicion of child abuse comes up. That is even more true when that suspicion of child abuse is wrong and the child instead has a rare disorder causing their fractures....Read Full Post (Source: About.com Pediatrics)

Flu Season Update - Flu Activity Remains High
Not surprisingly, the CDC is reporting that flu activity "remains high overall" in the United States. There are some declines in activity in a few states, but most states are seeing an increase in flu activity and severity indicators, including the number of hospitalizations and deaths. And if this is like every other flu season we have ever had, this flu season's peak may still be at least a week or two away....Read Full Post (Source: About.com Pediatrics)

Rashes from Wet Wipes
Rashes are common in kids. From eczema and impetigo to poison ivy, pediatricians see kids with rashes every day. Especially in the winter, pediatricians begin to see even more kids with dry skin, including rashes around their mouth (perioral dermatitis) and worsening eczema. That's why I haven't been too surprised to be seeing case reports describing kids with perioral dermatitis lately....Read Full Post (Source: About.com Pediatrics)

School Injuries Sending Kids to the Emergency Room
Two students in New York City were burned, including one who remains in critical condition, after a school science experiment went very wrong. The story was a good reminder, that although we don't hear about them very often, there were just over 7 million emergency room visits from 2001 to 2008 because of injuries at school. In fact, that same story described at least seven similar accidents involving the same experiment that burned children in schools in Texas, Ohio, and Washington....Read Full Post (Source: About.com Pediatrics)

Flu Update - Flu Season is Here
After a bit of a late start, at least when you compare it to the early start of last year's flu season, flu season is here. With 25 states reporting widespread flu last week, that might seem easy to see, but it is official now. A few days ago, the CDC reported that "significant increases in flu activity in the United States have occurred in the last couple weeks and this week 25 states are reporting widespread flu activity while another 20 are reporting regional activity, indicating that flu season is definitely here."...Read Full Post (Source: About.com Pediatrics)
