Health Service Utilization and Its Determinants among Senior Citizens in the Semiurban Area of Western Nepal: A Cross-Sectional Study
CONCLUSIONS: A remarkable proportion of older people reported using health services in the last year. However, a substantial proportion did not utilize health services that require further interventions to enable them. Efforts are required to promote the health and well-being of Nepal's growing elderly population, including potential enhancements to rural healthcare infrastructure by policymakers.PMID:38149286 | PMC:PMC10751160 | DOI:10.1155/2023/3655259 (Source: Journal of Aging Research)

Peru moves to crack down on scientific fraudsters
Lawmakers in Peru are poised to approve legislation that would make it easier to investigate and punish researchers who engage in fraudulent publishing practices, including paying to have their names added to a scientific paper. The move comes as Peru’s national science agency seeks to crack down on authorship buying and other unethical practices. It recently removed two scientists accused of violations from a national registry that is key to receiving government grants, job promotions, and salary bonuses. And officials are investigating many more researchers in the wake of an October media report that identified 1...

Bivariate analysis and logistic regression were performed to determine factors associated with awareness and use of PrEP. In the study population, 59.6% of participants were aware of PrEP, however, only 30.4% of them had utilized it. The odds of PrEP awareness were higher among particip ants who had completed high school or above (aOR = 4.1; 95% CI = 1.8–9.6), those with health insurance coverag...

Antibiotic resistance determinants among carbapenemase producing bacteria isolated from wastewaters of kathmandu, Nepal
Environ Pollut. 2023 Dec 17:123155. doi: 10.1016/j.envpol.2023.123155. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe emergence of carbapenem resistant bacteria (CRB) possesses a remarkable threat to the health of humans. CRB and carbapenem resistant genes (CRGs) have frequently been reported in clinical isolates from hospitals, however, their occurrence and distribution in wastewaters from various sources and river water have not been emphasized in Nepal. So, this study aimed to detect carbapenem resistant bacterial isolates and their resistance determinants in river water and different types of wastewaters. River water and both untre...

Acute oral poisoning due to pretilachlor herbicide - a rare case report from Nepal
CONCLUSION: This case underscores the need for prompt stabilization, vigilant monitoring, and supportive care to ensure timely recovery in pretilachlor poisoning cases despite similarities with organophosphate poisoning. It emphasizes the importance of educating and raising awareness among physicians about potential mimickers like organophosphates.PMID:38098598 | PMC:PMC10718366 | DOI:10.1097/MS9.0000000000001417 (Source: Annals of Medicine)

Assessing the performance of national sentinel food lists at subnational levels in six countries
CONCLUSION: National sentinel food lists can provide reliable data at subnational levels for most food groups, with some variability by country and sub-region. Assessing the accuracy of national sentinel food lists, especially for fruits and vegetables, before using them at the subnational level could avoid potentially underestimating dietary diversity and provide more accurate local information for programs, policy, and research.PMID:38098429 | DOI:10.1017/S1368980023002823 (Source: Public Health Nutrition)

Equity in Transplantation Access in Nepal: An Analysis of Gender, Geographic, and Caste-Based Disparities in Transplants
This study aims to examine the equity in accessing transplantation services. This retrospective observational study encompasses patients who underwent kidney transplantation up until December 2022 across five major hospitals. Through standardized data collection and analysis, we evaluated the distribution of recipients based on gender, caste/ethnicity, and geographic location. A total of 2040 kidney transplantations were performed during the period. Notably, 79% of the recipients were men and, interestingly, 70% of the donors were women. Geographically, the highest proportion (31.8%) of recipients were from Bagmati, while ...
