Source Tracing of Leishmania donovani in Emerging Foci of Visceral Leishmaniasis, Western Nepal
Emerg Infect Dis. 2024 Mar;30(3):611-613. doi: 10.3201/eid3003.231160.ABSTRACTWe sequenced Leishmania donovani genomes in blood samples collected in emerging foci of visceral leishmaniasis in western Nepal. We detected lineages very different from the preelimination main parasite population, including a new lineage and a rare one previously reported in eastern Nepal. Our findings underscore the need for genomic surveillance.PMID:38407178 | DOI:10.3201/eid3003.231160 (Source: Emerging Infectious Diseases)

Immune responses to typhoid conjugate vaccine in a two dose schedule among Nepalese children & lt;2  years of age
Vaccine. 2024 Feb 22:S0264-410X(24)00156-7. doi: 10.1016/j.vaccine.2024.02.010. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Previously, the Vi-typhoid conjugate vaccine (Vi-TT) was found to be highly efficacious in Nepalese children under 16 years of age. We assessed the immunogenicity of Vi-TT at 9 and 12 months of age and response to a booster dose at 15 months of age.METHODS: Infants were recruited at Patan Hospital, Kathmandu and received an initial dose of Vi-TT at 9 or 12 months of age with a booster dose at 15 months of age. Blood was taken at four timepoints, and antibody titres were measured using a commercial ELISA...

Statistical analysis of air quality dataset of Kathmandu, Nepal, with a New Extended Kumaraswamy Exponential Distribution
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2024 Feb 21. doi: 10.1007/s11356-024-32129-z. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis paper aims to create a new probability distribution and conducts statistical analysis on air quality dataset from Kathmandu. Using this innovative distribution, we have studied the ground reality of air quality conditions of Kathmandu, Nepal. In our research, we have developed a new probability distribution known as the New Extended Kumaraswamy Exponential Distribution by introducing an additional shape parameter to the Extended Kumaraswamy Exponential (EKwE) Distribution. Statistical characteristics such as cumulat...

Anticancer effects of rutin from Fagopyrum tataricum (tartary buckwheat) against osteosarcoma cell line
CONCLUSION: Osteosarcoma (SAOS2) cell lines' proliferation, migration, and ability to proliferate were reduced markedly by rutin fraction and it also causes apoptosis of Osteosarcoma cell lines (SAOS2).PMID:38374412 | DOI:10.1007/s11033-024-09218-w (Source: Mol Biol Cell)

Implementing Culturally-Informed Solutions for Addressing Geriatric Mental Health in Nepal
Up to 50.8% of Nepali older adults have depression, and the suicide rates among adults over 80 are nearly quadruple the rate among the general population. Addressing geriatric mental health in Nepal is difficult due to several factors. First, awareness is limited, even among healthcare providers. This can be partially attributed to limited mental health curricula —just 25-92 hours of didactic and 2-4 weeks of clinical training for MBBS degree holders—and specialist care is limited to one psychiatrist per 200,000 people. Internalized stigma related to COVID-19 and its psychosocial and mental health correlates: a multicentric health facility based observational study from Nepal
ConclusionCOVID-19 survivors and suspects are vulnerable to symptoms of depression, anxiety, and COVID-19-related internalized stigma. For the first time from Nepal, our data suggests that COVID-19-related internalized stigma is associated with anxiety and depression symptoms, perceived below-average socioeconomic status, involuntary admission, prior experience of being in isolation and quarantine, recent COVID-19 positive report, self-blame, below-average socioeconomic status and no income in the past one month. Mitigating and preventing internalized stigma associated with a public health crisis such as COVID-19 is impera...

Point-of-Care Ultrasound for High-Risk Pregnancy Screening in Rural Nepal
By training nurses and midwives on the basics of obstetric ultrasound, high-risk pregnancies in remote Nepalese villages can be identified and triaged. American radiology residents traveling to Nepal can improve their real-time, hands-on ultrasound scanning skills while learning the intricacies of practicing medicine in a low- and middle-income country. Global outreach work is increasing in popularity among US radiologists, emphasizing the importance of training radiology residents in point-of-care ultrasound. Isolation and molecular characterization of lumpy skin disease virus from Tamil Nadu, India during the outbreaks from 2020 to 2022
AbstractLumpy skin disease (LSD) caused by LSD virus is a WOAH notifiable, high-impact, transboundary poxviral disease of bovines. The first official report of LSDV in India is from Odisha state during August 2019. Since then, cases have been reported from many states including Tamil Nadu, a Southern state of India. The present study deals with isolation and molecular characterization of LSDV from Tamil Nadu during the period August 2020 to July 2022. LSDV was isolated in embryonated chicken eggs (ECE) and BHK 21 cells and was characterized based onP32, RPO30, andGPCR genes. The phylogenetic analysis revealed that Tamil Na...
