Fertility Preservation in Cervical Cancer-Treatment Strategies and Indications
Curr Oncol. 2024 Jan 4;31(1):296-306. doi: 10.3390/curroncol31010019.ABSTRACTCervical cancer is frequently diagnosed in women during their reproductive years, and fertility preservation is an essential part of their cancer treatment. In highly selected patients with early stage, low-risk cervical cancer and a tumor size ≤ 2 cm, several treatment strategies can be offered for patients wishing to preserve fertility, including radical/simple trachelectomy or conization with pelvic lymph node assessment. Trachelectomy can be performed through a vaginal, abdominal, or minimally invasive approach and has been shown to have an ...

Radiation-induced changes in gene expression in rectal cancer specimens
ConclusionFuture studies would benefit from standardised prospective approaches to sampling to enable the inclusion of timepoints relevant to the tumour and immune response. (Source: Clinical and Translational Oncology)

Early change in apparent diffusion coefficient as a predictor of response to neoadjuvant androgen deprivation and external beam radiation therapy for intermediate- to high-risk prostate cancer
To determine the role of serial apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) as a biomarker for response to neoadjuvant androgen deprivation therapy (nADT) followed by external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) in intermediate- to high-risk prostate cancer (PCa) patients. (Source: Clinical Radiology)

Checkpoint Inhibition in Addition to Dabrafenib/Trametinib for BRAF < sup > V600E < /sup > -Mutated Anaplastic Thyroid Carcinoma
Conclusions: Our results show that in BRAFm-ATC, addition of pembrolizumab to dabrafenib/trametinib may significantly prolong survival. Surgical resection of the primary tumor after initial BRAF-targeted therapy in selected patients may provide further survival benefit. However, conclusions are limited by the retrospective nature of the study. Additional prospective data are needed to confirm this observation.PMID:38226606 | DOI:10.1089/thy.2023.0573 (Source: Thyroid : official journal of the American Thyroid Association)

Principles of cancer treatment by radiotherapy
Radiotherapy (or radiation therapy) uses ionizing radiation to selectively kill cancer cells, especially for solid tumours. Like surgery, it is meant to be a ‘local’ treatment, although its beneficial systemic (abscopal) effects are being discovered. It is most commonly used in addition to surgery (adjuvant, e.g. breast), but its role in the neoadjuvant setting in combination with chemotherapy for some cancers (e.g. rectum) is also established. In ea rly stages of some cancers, it can be the definitive treatment, avoiding surgery and enabling organ preservation (e.g. (Source: Surgery (Medicine Publishing))

Induction PD-1 inhibitor toripalimab plus chemotherapy followed by concurrent chemoradiotherapy and consolidation toripalimab for bulky locally advanced non-small-cell lung cancer: protocol for a randomized phase II trial (InTRist study)
DiscussionThe InTRist study is the first randomized phase II trial to investigate the feasibility of induction anti-PD-1 toripalimab plus chemotherapy followed by cCRT and consolidation toripalimab in bulky LA-NSCLC, providing novel evidence for the synergistic strategy combining anti-PD-1 blockade with radiotherapy to prolong immunotherapy benefits, overcome resistance, and enhance abscopal immune response.Clinical trial registrationClinicalTrials.gov, identifier NCT05888402. T < sub > 2 < /sub > * Imaging Assessment of Neoadjuvant Radiation Therapy Combined With Pharmacological Ascorbate in Extremity Soft-Tissue Sarcomas: A Pilot Study
CONCLUSION: T2* measurements prior to treatment, two weeks after initiating treatment, and before surgery showed moderate to strong correlations with percent necrosis. These results support the potential for using T2* mapping to predict and assess response to neoadjuvant radiation therapy combined with pharmacological ascorbate in extremity STS. A Pilot Study of Nutritional Supplementation in Soft Tissue Sarcoma Patients
CONCLUSION: In our limited sample size, there was no difference in wound healing complications between sarcoma patients who received postoperative BCAA supplementation compared to a historical cohort who were not supplemented. Patients who did not receive supplementation had a significant decline in post-operative psoas index following operative sarcoma removal. The impact of neo/adjuvant treatment choices on prognosis for surgically treated small-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the cervix
In conclusion, for surgically treated SCNCC, adjuvant chemotherapy showed a positive influence on DFS while neoadjuvant chemotherapy harmed DFS. OS was unaffected by either treatment choice.PMID:38215035 | DOI:10.4149/neo_2023_230802N404 (Source: Neoplasma)
