National taxation on sugar-sweetened beverages and its association with overweight, obesity, and diabetes
CONCLUSIONS: Taxation is highly heterogeneous across countries in terms of products and design, which might influence its effectiveness. Our findings provide some evidence regarding a deceleration of the increasing prevalence rates of overweight and obesity among children occurring in some countries following introduction of taxation. Dirty work: well-intentioned mental health workers cannot ameliorate harms in offshore detention
Professional providers of mental health services are motivated to help people, including, or especially, vulnerable people. We analyse the ethical implications of mental health providers accepting employment at detention centres that operate out of the normal regulatory structure of the modern state. Specifically, we examine tensions and moral harms experienced by providers at the Australian immigration detention centre on the island of Nauru. Australia has adopted indefinite offshore detention for asylum-seekers arriving by boat as part of a deterrence strategy that relies on making detainment conditions harsh. This has k...

Health of children who experienced Australian immigration detention

Offshore detention: cross-sectional analysis of the health of children and young people seeking asylum in Australia
Conclusions This study highlights the almost universal physical and mental health difficulties in a sample of CYP who experienced forced migration and were subjected to Australia’s offshore immigration detention policy. Immigration detention in recipient countries, a known adverse childhood experience, may contribute to or exacerbate harmful outcomes in CYP seeking asylum. (Source: Archives of Disease in Childhood)

A national survey integrating clinical, laboratory, and WASH data to determine the typology of trachoma in Nauru
ConclusionsTF, nucleic acid, and age-specific antibody prevalence collectively indicate that high levels ofC.trachomatis transmission among children present a high risk of ocular damage due to trachoma. The absence of trichiasis with trachomatous scarring suggest a relatively recent increase in transmission intensity. (Source: PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases)

Pervasive refusal syndrome in child asylum seekers on Nauru.
CONCLUSIONS: The emergence of PRS on Nauru highlighted the risks of long-term detention of children in settings that are unable to meet their physical and psycho-social needs. The case cluster also underscored (a) the difficulties faced by doctors working in conditions where their medical and legal obligations may be in direct conflict, and (b) the role of clinicians in patient advocacy.
