NASCI case of the month: desmoplakin cardiomyopathy masquerading as acute myocarditis
We present a case of a young patient with chest pain. Labs and cardiac imaging were suspicious for acute myocarditis. Genetic testing revealed a diagnosis of desmoplakin cardiomyopathy. Desmoplakin cardiomyopathy may be considered in patients with recurrent acute myocarditis or a family history of cardiac disease to avoid the potential for misdiagnosis. Sheep abortions associated with Neospora caninum and Toxoplasma gondii infections in multiple flocks from Southern Brazil
This study verified the occurrence of these diseases in sheep fetuses from Santa Catarina State, Southern Brazil from 2015 to 2022. Sheep fetuses were necropsied with organ sampling for histopathology, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) forNeospora caninum andToxoplasma gondii using the Nc5 and SAG2 targets, respectively, in frozen brain tissue. Microbiological culture and RT-PCR forPestivirus were conducted to discard other abortion causes. One positive fetus for toxoplasmosis was genotyped using multiplex multilocus nested PCR-RFLP (Mn-PCR-RFLP) with ten genetic markers. Fifty-five sheep fetuses were evaluated, with 10 ...

Predicting Acute Cardiovascular Complications in COVID-19: Insights from a Specialized Cardiac Referral Department
CONCLUSIONS D-dimer and NT-proBNP, but not troponin T, are useful in differentiating CVDs in patients with COVID-19. ACS with COVID-19 increased in-hospital mortality independently from extent of lung involvement, while coexisting APE or AMyo did not.PMID:38644597 | DOI:10.12659/MSM.942612 (Source: Medical Science Monitor)

Targeting NLRP3 signaling reduces myocarditis-induced arrhythmogenesis and cardiac remodeling
Myocarditis substantially increases the risk of ventricular arrhythmia. Approximately 30% of all ventricular arrhythmia cases in patients with myocarditis originate from the right ventricular outflow tract (RV... (Source: Journal of Biomedical Science)

The protective effect of Macrostemonoside T from Allium macrostemon Bunge against Isoproterenol-Induced myocardial injury via the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway
This study established an ISO-induced MI model in rats and assessed H9c2 cytotoxicity to examine MST's impact on MI. Various assays, including histopathological staining, TUNEL staining, immunohistochemical staining, DCFH-DA staining, JC-1 staining, ELISA technique, and Western blot (WB), were utilized to explore the potential molecular mechanisms of MI protection. In vivo experiments demonstrated that ISO caused myocardial fiber disorders, elevated cardiac enzyme levels, and apoptosis. However, pretreatment with MST significantly mitigated these detrimental changes. In vitro experiments revealed that MST boosted antioxida...

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) during aplasia: A bridge towards myopericarditis recovery after autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplant for systemic sclerosis and recent Coronarovirus disease (COVID-19) vaccination
This report illustrates, for the first time to our knowledge, that ECMO can be indicated despite aplasia during aHSCT and successfully used as a bridge towards heart function recovery in highly selected and fragile AD patients. We review the factors that may contribute to endothelial and myocardial stunning and acute reversible cardiac failure in SSc and aggravate intrinsic endothelial injury during the aHSCT procedure. These classically include: cyclophosphamide drug toxicity, viral infections and autoimmune activation with disease flair per se. In the COVID-19 pandemic times, acute myocarditis due to recent viral infecti...

Ivermectin ameliorates acute myocarditis via the inhibition of importin-mediated nuclear translocation of NF- κB/p65
CONCLUSIONS: Ivermectin inhibits the nuclear translocation of NF-κB/p65 and the expression of major pro-inflammatory cytokines in myocarditis. The therapeutic effects of IVM on viral and non-viral myocarditis models suggest its potential application in the treatment of acute myocarditis.PMID:38636372 | DOI:10.1016/j.intimp.2024.112073 (Source: International Immunopharmacology)

Multimodality imaging of eosinophilic myocarditis (loeffler ’s endocarditis) in a patient with idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome
AbstractEosinophilic myocarditis can result in endomyocardial fibrosis affecting both ventricles, leading to restrictive cardiomyopathy. Multimodality imaging is crucial for diagnosis, as demonstrated in this case of a patient presenting with symptoms of heart failure. (Source: The International Journal of Cardiovascular Imaging)

Immune checkpoint inhibitor related myositis: an observational, retrospective, pharmacovigilance study
CONCLUSIONS: Clinicians should be aware of the potential for ICI-associated myositis, as it can be particularly life-threatening, especially in elderly patients or when it occurs concurrently with other AEs such as myocarditis or severe myasthenia gravis.PMID:38629402 | DOI:10.1080/14740338.2024.2343023 (Source: Expert Opinion on Drug Safety)

Overview of U.S. COVID-19 vaccine safety surveillance systems
This report describes the U.S. government's COVID-19 vaccine safety monitoring systems and programs used by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Department of Defense, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Indian Health Service. Using the adverse event of myocarditis following mRNA COVID-19 vaccination as a model, we demonstrate how the multiple, complementary monitoring systems worked to rapidly detect, assess, and verify a vaccine safety signal. In addition, longer-term follow-up was conducted to evaluate the recovery status of myocarditis cases following vaccin...
