Prevalence and genetic characteristics of fusidic acid resistant Staphylococcus aureus clinical isolates: Emergence of t030 strains carrying fusB in Tehran, Iran
Acta Microbiol Immunol Hung. 2023 Mar 23. doi: 10.1556/030.2023.01997. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe literature on fusidic acid resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains is scarce in Iran, although the emergence of these strains in health care settings is increasing. This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 68 fusidic acid resistant S. aureus strains to learn about the molecular characteristics and antimicrobial resistance of strains isolated from hospitalized patients. In the present study, the prevalence of resistance to fusidic acid in S. aureus isolates was 15.1%. Fusidic acid resistance determinative ...

Two new siderophores produced by Pseudomonas sp. NCIMB 10586: The anti-oomycete non-ribosomal peptide synthetase-dependent mupirochelin and the NRPS-independent triabactin
ConclusionAltogether, we have demonstrated here that besides pyoverdine, Pseudomonas sp. NCIMB 10586 produces two newly identified siderophores, namely mupirochelin, a weak siderophore with strong antagonism activity against G. ultimum, and the potent siderophore triabactin. Genomic and clinical case characterisation of Staphylococcus haemolyticus isolated from dogs and cats in the United States, including strains with high-level mupirocin tolerance
CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Staphylococcus haemolyticus may be an under-recognised pathogen in companion animals, and its demonstrated potential for multidrug-resistance, meticillin-resistance, and high-level mupirocin tolerance may create a therapeutic challenge. Further studies should evaluate the prior antimicrobial use and immunocompromised status as risk factors for infection with S. haemolyticus.PMID:36908239 | DOI:10.1111/vde.13154 (Source: Veterinary Dermatology)

Novel recombinant endolysin ointment with broad antimicrobial activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus isolated from wounds and burns
Arch Microbiol. 2023 Mar 4;205(4):104. doi: 10.1007/s00203-023-03434-x.ABSTRACTThe major problem in the management of burn wounds is infections. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is one of the major causes of infection in burn wounds. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria around the world have become a major therapeutic challenge. Bacteriophages and their lysin are suggested as an antimicrobial alternative agent. The approach of this study was to evaluate the potential of recombinant phage lysin ointment efficacy in MRSA burn wound infection in vitro. Whole genome sequencing was performed to the three isolated bac...

The effect of nasal Staphylococcus aureus colonization and antibiotic treatment on disease activity in ANCA-associated vasculitis: a retrospective cohort study in the Netherlands
AbstractThe aim of this study was to identify the role of nasalStaphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) colonization and the effect of systemic or local antibiotic treatment on disease activity in patients with antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA) associated vasculitis and ear nose and throat (ENT) involvement. Clinical, laboratory and histological data from all patients with ANCA-associated vasculitis and ENT involvement, who were diagnosed in two medical centres in The Netherlands between 1981 and 2020, were retrospectively collected. NasalS. aureus colonization was defined as at least one positive nasal swab during fol...

An unusual outbreak in the Netherlands: community-onset impetigo caused by a meticillin-resistant < em > Staphylococcus aureus < /em > with additional resistance to fusidic acid, June 2018 to January 2020
Euro Surveill. 2022 Dec;27(49). doi: 10.2807/1560-7917.ES.2022.27.49.2200245.ABSTRACTIn this retrospective observational study, we analysed a community outbreak of impetigo with meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), with additional resistance to fusidic acid (first-line treatment). The outbreak occurred between June 2018 and January 2020 in the eastern part of the Netherlands with an epidemiological link to three cases from the north-western part. Forty nine impetigo cases and eight carrier cases were identified, including 47 children. All but one impetigo case had community-onset of symptoms. Pharmacy prescri...

Chitosan and hyaluronic-based hydrogels could promote the infected wound healing
This study proposed an effective strategy based on antioxidant, antibacterial, self-healing multifunctional hydrogel for wound healing under various infectious complications. This natural macromolecular hydrogel could act as an effective reactive oxygen species scavenger to promote the wound healing in the future.PMID:36646352 | DOI:10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.123271 (Source: International Journal of Biological Macromolecules)
