Biofilm Growth on Orthopaedic Cerclage Materials: Non-metallic Polymers Are Less Resistant to Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus Bacterial Adhesion
Data on bacterial adhesion to cerclage cables is sparse. We aimed to compare five cerclage products for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) adhesion to determine: Are non-metallic polymer cables more resistant to bacterial adhesion than common metallic wires and cables? Methicillin-Resistant < em > Staphylococcus aureus < /em > Carriage among Neonate Mothers, Healthcare Workers, and Environmental Samples in Neonatal Intensive Care Units: A Systematic Review
CONCLUSION: With a significant heterogeneity, our systematic review found high MRSA carriage rates in neonate mothers, healthcare workers, and across various environmental surfaces in NICUs, posing a potential risk of nosocomial infections. Urgent interventions, including regular screening and decolonization of MRSA carriers, reinforcing infection control measures, and enhancing cleaning and disinfection procedures within NICUs, are crucial. This trial is registered with CRD42023407114.PMID:38623471 | PMC:PMC11018372 | DOI:10.1155/2024/5675786 (Source: Biomed Res)

Prevalence and genetic characteristics of  Staphylococcus aureus isolates from cell phones of medical students from Iran
Acta Microbiol Immunol Hung. 2024 Apr 15. doi: 10.1556/030.2024.02193. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAlthough mobile phones as a rapid communication vehicle can lead to improved quality of healthcare, they can also facilitate the transmission of pathogens to patients. This current research focuses on genetic diversity, and genes involved in resistance and biofilm production of Staphylococcus aureus isolates from mobile phones of medical students. Antibiotic resistance profiling and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of antibiotic resistance and biofilm-related genes were investigated and statistically analyzed. ...

Interaction of beauvericin in combination with antibiotics against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella typhimurium
Toxicon. 2024 Apr 12:107713. doi: 10.1016/j.toxicon.2024.107713. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMultidrug resistance in bacteria is a major challenge worldwide, increasing both mortality by infections and costs for the health systems. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to find new drugs against resistant bacteria. Beauvericin (BEA) is a mycotoxin produced by entomopathogenic and other fungi of the genus Fusarium. Our work determines the effect of BEA combined with antibiotics, which has not been previously explored. The combination analysis included different antibiotics against non-methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus a...

Emerging threats of high biofilm formation and antibiotic resistance in clinical methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolates from Pakistan
CONCLUSIONS: Clinical MRSA strains exhibit a substantial potential for biofilm formation, contributing to a resistant phenotype. Routine antibiotic testing in clinical settings that overlook the biofilm aspect may lead to the failure of empiric antibiotic therapy.PMID:38614413 | DOI:10.1016/j.meegid.2024.105592 (Source: Infection, Genetics and Evolution)

Daptomycin and ceftaroline combination for the treatment of persistent methicillin-resistant < em > Staphylococcus aureus < /em > bloodstream infections: a case series and literature review
In this report, we present a case series of 7 patients who failed vancomycin and then were treated with daptomycin and ceftaroline for persistent MRSA BSIs. The median age (IQR) of the included patients was 59 (48-67), with 5 male and 2 female patients. Six patients (85.7%) had a clinical cure for their persistent BSIs. The median time (IQR) for sterilization of MRSA BSIs after initiation of daptomycin and ceftaroline combination was 2 days (1-3). Among the patients who had clinical cures, the median time for clinical cures (IQR) was 6 weeks (4.5-6 weeks). The combination of daptomycin and ceftaroline could be an excellent...
