Oral cancer awareness in young South-Asian communities in London.
CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that young adults in the South Asian Community are exposed to a number of risk factors for oral cancer yet have poor knowledge of the implications of these health-related behaviours, and ways in which oral cancer can be detected earlier. The survey highlighted specific issues for action. PMID: 27149776 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Community Dental Health)

Trends in mouth cancer incidence in Mumbai, India (1995–2009): An age-period-cohort analysis
Conclusions APC analyses from the Mumbai cancer registry indicate a significant linear increase of mouth cancer incidence from 1995 to 2009 in men, which was driven by younger men aged 25–49 years, and a non-significant upward trend in similarly aged younger women. Health promotion efforts should more effectively target younger cohorts. (Source: Cancer Epidemiology)

Detecting internet search activity for mouth cancer in Ireland
Mouth Cancer Awareness Day in Ireland was launched in September 2010 by survivors of the disease to promote public awareness of suspicious signs of oral cancer and to provide free dental examinations. To find out whether its introduction had increased public interest in the disease, we used Google Trends to find out how often users in Ireland had searched for “oral cancer” and “mouth cancer” across all Google domains between January 2005 and December 2013. The number of internet searches for these cancers has increased significantly (p (Source: The British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery)

The Loss of p16 Expression Worsens the Prognosis of OSCC
Oral squamous cell carcinoma is the most common neoplasia of the mouth. Downregulation of p16INK4a (a cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor) has been reported for mouth cancer and it is believed that its inactivation is an early event in oral carcinogenesis. The goal of this article is to quantitatively report expression of p16INK4a and the state of methylation in oral squamous cell carcinoma, and evaluate its relationship with the clinical and prognostic factors, in addition to setting out a multivariate model that predicts survival. The mean expression of p16INK4a was 7.70 (SD=14.07) (F=0.894; P=0.449). According to the semi...

Burden of Oral Diseases in Iran, 1990-2010: Findings from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2010.
CONCLUSION: The findings address the challenging changes in oral diseases and difficulties in responding to the urgent oral health needs in Iran. The burden of oral diseases should be considered as a priority in Iran. A need also exists to pay more attention to the oral health policies and principles of preventive oral care. Global analyses of disease burdens provide a useful framework to guide a suitable policy in response to disease changes. In fact, strong national and sub-national analyses will be required to provide more effective public health strategies. PMID: 26265516 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Archives...

Squamous Cell Carcinoma: Delayed Diagnosis
Despite efforts to promote the early diagnosis of mouth cancer, some cases are still detected only in the advanced stages, with no chance of cure. The profile of patients with such lesions often reveals that they live in regions with a low human development index. A 59-year-old black male, who was a rural worker, alcoholic, and pipe smoker, sought treatment at our stomatology clinic with volume increases of the gingiva and tongue. Clinical examination revealed a tumor-like lesion in the sublingual region extending to the mentum region, including the mucosa and semimucosa of the lower lip. (Source: Oral Surgery, Oral Medici...

Supraclavicular artery island flap reconstruction of a contralateral partial laryngopharyngeal defect.
Authors: Kucur C, Durmus K, Ozer E Abstract Oncologic resection of head and neck cancers often results in complex reconstructive problems that can require local, regional, or free flaps. Herein, we present a case of a 67-year-old female with a history of floor of mouth cancer who had a second primary carcinoma in the left side of pharynx, 9 years after initial therapy. She underwent a wide oncologic resection requiring laryngopharyngeal reconstruction. Significant scar formation on the left side, due to previous surgery and radiotherapy, prevented us from harvesting an ipsilateral flap. Therefore, we used ...

Ankle osteoarthritis: A rare complication after free fibular flap harvesting
We report a case of rapidly progressed ankle OA after fibular flap harvesting and the experience in managing it. A 46-year-old obese woman was diagnosed to have floor of mouth cancer, T4aN1M0. After wide excision of the tumor, a 6.5 cm segmental mandibular defect was reconstructed using a free fibular osteocutaneous flap. The flap was harvested from the right leg, preserving 6.5 cm of the distal fibular bone. The patient was discharged 2 months later and could walk without assistance. Eight months after the patient was discharged, she complained of severe pain in the right ankle, especially while ambulating. Plain radiog...

Sites of Origin of Oral Cavity Cancer in Nonsmokers vs Smokers Possible Evidence of Dental Trauma Carcinogenesis and Its Importance Compared With Human Papillomavirus
ImportanceThe relatively high and possibly rising incidence of mouth squamous cell carcinoma in nonsmokers, especially women, without obvious cause has been noted by previous authors. Is chronic dental trauma and irritation a carcinogen, and what is its importance compared with human papillomavirus (HPV) oropharyngeal cancer in nonsmokers?ObjectiveTo determine whether oral cavity cancers occurred more commonly at sites of dental trauma and how the position of these cancers varied between nonsmokers lacking major identified carcinogens and smokers. If these cancers occurred more frequently at sites of chronic trauma, especi...
