Arctic GEOTRACES Week One
The USCGC Healy sailing out of Dutch Harbor, Alaska into the Bering Sea (August 9, 2015). And we're off! The U.S. GEOTRACES Arctic expedition departed Dutch Harbor on August 9th onboard the USCGC Healy. Shortly after departure we had our first safety drill. Everyone onboard has to practice putting on immersion suits which are kept on the boat for an emergency situation that would force us to abandon ship and jump into the water. The suits are bright orange with a flashing light and whistle, and the back has an inflatable pouch for flotation. There is a rubber cap that goes over your head and hugs tightly around the neck...

Create Your Future
Sometimes we go through life thinking we have no idea what tomorrow will bring. Other times we know almost exactly what the next day will look like. On traveling days, for example, I know what time my alarm will sound, when I will depart for the airport, and even what I will wear. By Gianni Jaccoma Credit: Gianni Jaccoma/Thrillist For many of us, carsickness is the bane of every automotive experience: It's always there, preventing us from navigating with our phone or even reading a book to pass the time without the sudden onset of a headache, cold sweats, and crippling nausea. Why do some of us fall violently ill just by glancing at a book in a moving car, while others can read through an entire road trip without any problem at all? Here's the scientific lowdown on what makes carsickness ...

Self-Driving Cars Could Make You Vomit
Self-driving cars could be a lot like carnival rides: fun, but they could make you hurl. According to a new study from the University of Michigan's Transportation Research Institute, six to twelve percent of Americans in self-driving cars will experience moderate to severe motion sickness. Nothing like vomiting all over your expensive new ride! Ever notice that you only get car-sick when you're a passenger in a car and not the driver? There's a reason for that. When what your eyes see doesn't match up with what the rest of your body is feeling, you can suffer from motion sickness. If you don't have your eyes on the road...
