Dietary agents in the prevention of radiation-induced nausea and vomiting (RINV): review addressing the scientific observations, benefits, lacunae and future direction
CONCLUSIONS: Results indicate that Indian pennywort, Sea buckthorn, Spearmint oil and ginger are beneficial in mitigating RINV. Also, of the four plants investigated in preclinical models of study, mint oil and ginger seem to be more useful and merit structured systematic translational studies to ascertain the benefit of these two agents.PMID:38506659 | DOI:10.1080/09553002.2024.2309899 (Source: International Journal of Radiation Biology)

Chemical composition and toxicity of Moroccan < em > mentha spicata < /em > and < em > Artemisia absinthium < /em > essential oils against < em > Pthorimaea operculella < /em > , the potato moth
Nat Prod Res. 2024 Feb 25:1-10. doi: 10.1080/14786419.2024.2320740. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe current methods employed to mitigate losses caused by Phthorimaea operculella primarily rely on the application of synthetic insecticides. We have utilised essential oils of Mentha spicata L. and Artemisia absinthium against Phthorimaea operculella. The essential oils were obtained using hydrodistillation and analysed via gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Mentha spicata essential oil contained D-limonene (25.12%) and D-carvone (7.47%) while the essential oil of Artemisia absinthium was rich of 3,3,5-trimethylcyclohexen...

Chemical composition and toxicity of commercial Mentha spicata and Eucalyptus citriodora essential oils on Culex quinquefasciatus and non-target insects
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2024 Feb 23. doi: 10.1007/s11356-024-32249-6. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCurrent vector control strategies based on synthetic chemicals are not eco-friendly against non-target organisms; hence, alternative approaches are highly required. Commercially purchased oil of Mentha spicata (Spearmint) and Eucalyptus citriodora (Citriodora) were examined against the medical pest Cx. quinquefasciatus (Say) and their non-toxicity on the aquatic species was evaluated. Chemical screening with gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis revealed a total of 14 and 11 compounds in Citr...

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 7583: Effects of Harvest Time and Hydrodistillation Time on Yield, Composition, and Antioxidant Activity of Mint Essential Oil
In this study, we assessed the effects of different harvest times (9 a.m., 1 p.m., and 5 p.m.) and hydrodistillation times (60, 90, and 120 min) on the yield, chemical composition, and antioxidant activity of the spearmint (Mentha spicata L.) essential oil (EO) sourced from the Amazon region. EO yield was ≥1.55% and was not significantly influenced (p ≥ 0.05) by the different harvest times and hydrodistillation times. Thirty-one different organic compounds were identified, of which menthol (91.56–95.68%), menthone (0.6–2.72%), and isomenthone (0.55–1.46%) were...

Anti-oomycete activities from essential oils and their major compounds on Phytophthora infestans
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Oct 2. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-29270-6. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBotanicals are various plant-based products like plant extracts or essential oils. Anti-fungal activities of selected essential oils were tested on the pathogen causing potato and tomato late blight (Phytophthora infestans). Tests to evaluate anti-oomycete activities of commercial essential oils and their major compounds were carried out in vitro in microplate in liquid media. Anti-oomycete activities on Phytophthora infestans strain were obtained from essential oils/major compounds: Eucalyptus citriodora/citronellal; Syz...

Complete mitochondrial genome of Mentha spicata L. reveals multiple chromosomal configurations and RNA editing events
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Aug 11:126257. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.126257. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMentha spicata L. is a valuable plant that yields spearmint oil, widely utilized in the pharmaceutical, chemical, and cosmetic industries. The mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) is an essential material for molecular breeding and evolution studies. Here, the mitogenome of M. spicata was assembled by combining Nanopore and Illumina reads. It consisted of a linear chromosome (Ch1) and two circular chromosomes (Ch2 and Ch3). Furthermore, we showed two pairs of repeats (R1 and R2) mediated recombinations resulting in mult...
