Sunday Sermonette: Yeah, we get it
Don ' t worry, we ' re almost done with this dreck. I ' ll have a good deal to say about the Book of Ester, which comes next, and is something completely different. Meanwhile, the point of this chapter is pretty much the same as the point of the previous chapter: hammering home that the people are supplying the priests and their hangers on in the Temple with plenty of swag. First though, we a list of names. Ezra, or somebody with that name, reappears, but the name is just in passing and he ' s apparently nobody special. Then there ' s the celebration of completion of the wall, featuring a lot of music. (As I ' ve said befo...

Top 4 money mistakes doctors make
Yes, this sounds very ominous. However, there is a reason why I wanted to alert you to the fear of mismanaging your finances. Doctors live in the limelight and are highly traceable on the internet. RCM: Fixing the Old and Adjusting to the New
Revenue Cycle Management (RCM) is like a one of those huge Lego sculptures. From the outside it looks one thing, but upon further inspection there are a million tiny little pieces that fit together to create the whole. Having a well executed RCM strategy is crucial to keep your organization running because it impacts everything. When things are simple and easy to pay for, patients are happy, the staff is happy, and you are most definitely happy. But if any part is misaligned, the whole sculpture can be disformed or even fall apart. So how do we improve? How do we make our sculpture be more realistic? The key lies in optimi...

Sunday Sermonette: Taking the pledge
Don ' t worry, we ' re getting close to the end of Nehemiah and the books that come next are a lot more interesting.  Ch. 10 starts off with the sort of pointless list of names that the Chronicler and whoever wrote this seem to like. Note, however, that Ezra once again seems to have disappeared. Then it describes the pledge the people took which mostly has to do with giving stuff to the priests, which is a major emphasis of all the material we ' ve been reading going back to Deuteronomy. Which is no surprise, don ' t forget who wrote this.Nehemiah the governor, the son of Hakaliah.Zedekiah,2 Seraiah, Az...

An alarming rise in military suicides: Unveiling hidden crisis and urgent need for action
During the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, suicides among active-duty troops were frequently reported. Since then, news reports have subsided but the suicides have not. In fact, a 2022 report from the Defense Suicide Prevention Office revealed that there were more suicides in 2021 than any other year since the September 11 attacks. According to Army Read more… An alarming rise in military suicides: Unveiling hidden crisis and urgent need for action originally appeared in KevinMD.com. (Source: Kevin, M.D. - Medical Weblog)

A man with chest pain off and on for two days, and " No STEMI " at triage.
Written by Kaley El-Arab MD, edits by Pendell Meyers and Stephen SmithA 61-year-old male with hypertension and hyperlipidemia presented to the emergency department for chest tightness radiating to the back of his neck that has been intermittent for the past day or two. Here is his triage ECG which was obtained at 20:34 during active pain. What do you think? This ECG was read as “No STEMI” with no prior available for comparison. It is true this ECG does not meet STEMI criteria (there is 1.0 mm STE in III, and possibly 0.5 mm in aVF), but there is clear evidence of OMI findings on this ECG. Leads II, III, and aVF hav...

Sunday Sermonette: Who'dat?
In Nehemiah 8, a character named Ezra appears. Is this the same dude who is the protagonist of the Book of Ezra? Doesn ' t seem to be -- he has a different job description. Previously, he was in charge, in basically the same role Nehemiah has in the current story. Now he ' s a priest and " teacher of the law " (rendered " scribe " in the KJV). Did Nehemiah show up and demote him? What this really shows is that the book Ezra/Nehemiah grew by accretion and there was no editor to assure continuity. Exactly how different protagonists got assigned to the two versions of the story there ' s no telling. The " Book of the Law of Mo...

Wednesday Bible Study: Transcription error
Nehemiah 7 reveals the accretionary history of Ezra-Nehemiah. It ' s essentially a faulty transcription of Ezra 2, but the lists of the returnees from exile contradict each other in 15 places, mostly in the numbers of people. I won ' t bother to list all of the contradictions, but just so you get the idea, in Ezra 775 children of Arah returned, while here there were only 652. The numbers of the various other clans also generally differ by similar amounts, as do the number of singers and porters, and the amount of gold, silver and priestly garments the people give. So this is obviously the same story, probably copied severa...

Unveiling the game-changing diabetic drugs: Revolutionizing weight loss and diabetes management
The drug representative had a smug look; she knew she had a winner. She didn’t need to sell anything—the American public had already bought the story. There are very few drugs in history where patients are excited about the conversation and want to take a new medication. I am talking about the new class of Read more… Unveiling the game-changing diabetic drugs: Revolutionizing weight loss and diabetes management originally appeared in KevinMD.com. What ’s in the Republican Economic Tax Package?
Adam N. MichelWays and Means Committee Republicans recently introduced theAmerican Families and Jobs Act, an economic tax package that addresses significant ongoing tax increases on domestic investment built into the 2017Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. Most of the Republicans ’ major proposed changes in theAmericanFamilies and Jobs Act expire after 2025, worsening current tax uncertainty and obscuring the necessary reforms ’ fiscal cost.Other than permanence, theAmerican Families and Jobs Act could be significantly improved by adding Universal Savings Accounts for family savings flexibility and neutral cost recovery for current...

Trade in Real Life: Sorry Charlie (and Senator Warner) for Terrible Tuna Tariffs
Gabriella Beaumont-SmithDuring the pandemic, Senator Mark Warner (D ‑VA) released a video showcasing his tuna melt recipe —complete with a surprising amount of mayonnaise and heated in a microwave (no judgement). The “unhinged” recipe video went viral and three years later,Washingtonian sat down with Senator Warner to have him taste ‐test seven tuna melt sandwiches from DC and Virginia restaurants.Senator Warner ’s tuna‐melt obsession reminded me of a tariff reclassificationcase I  read about last year. Starkist Co. is well‐known for its single‐serve pouches of tuna and argued to the Fede...

Sunday Sermonette: Render unto Artaxerxes
The main point of Chapter 6 is one that has been emphasized repeatedly in Ezrah/Nehemiah. The Jews have no ambition to restore their independence. Nehemiah is avowedly a servant of Artaxerxes, and he treats the claim by hostile neighbors that he ' s planning to rebel and declare a new Jewish kingdom as libelous. So, the idea of a Jewish state was abandoned, in fact forcibly rejected, long before the creation of rabbinical Judaism and the Roman diaspora. I will just make one more observation, that a Persian diaspora continued even after the restoration of the Temple. We ' ll encounter this in the next, very curious, Book of...
