Shedding light on the hidden methamphetamine abuse: a nation-wide 7-year post-mortem study in Taiwan
CONCLUSIONS: Using autopsy dataset as a secondary source, we identified that over half of the cases involved accidental drug intoxication. The significant proportion of cases involving multiple substances, psychiatric medications, and drug-impaired driving raises concerning.PMID:38462530 | DOI:10.2188/jea.JE20230263 (Source: Journal of Epidemiology)

Streamlining regular liquid chromatography with MALDI-TOF MS and NMR spectroscopy using automatic full-contact splitless spotting interface and flash-tap fractioning collection
Anal Chim Acta. 2024 Apr 15;1298:342401. doi: 10.1016/j.aca.2024.342401. Epub 2024 Feb 26.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: High-resolution matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy are powerful tools to identify unknown psychoactive substances. However, in complex matrices, trace levels of unknown substances usually require additional fractionation and concentration. Specialized liquid chromatography systems are necessary for both techniques. The small flow rate of nano LC, typically paired with MALDI-TOF MS, often results in prolonged f...

Effect of MAOA rs1465108 polymorphism on susceptibility to substance/alcohol use disorder: a novel PCR-RFLP assay for the detection of MAOA rs1465108
CONCLUSIONS: The results presented here do not support the hypothesis that MAOA rs1465108 is associated with substance/alcohol use disorders. The intensity of depressive symptoms could be changed according to the abused substance type. A novel PCR-RFLP was developed for genotyping of MAOA rs1465108 polymorphism, which could be a better option for laboratories without high technology equipment.PMID:38457024 | DOI:10.1007/s11033-024-09366-z (Source: Molecular Biology Reports)

Evaluating the Protective Effects of Thymoquinone on Methamphetamine-induced Toxicity in an < em > In Vitro < /em > Model Based on Differentiated PC12 Cells
This study aimed to investigate the potential protective effects of TQ against Meth-induced toxicity by using an in vitro model based on nerve growth factor-differentiated PC12 cells. Cell differentiation was assessed by detecting the presence of a neuronal marker with flow cytometry. The effects of Meth exposure were evaluated in the in vitro neuronal cell-based model via the determination of cell viability (in an MTT assay) and apoptosis (by annexin/propidium iodide staining). The generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), as well as the levels of glutathione (GSH) and dopamine, were also determined. The model was used...
