Abbott Targets Drug and Alcohol-Impaired Drivers in New Collaboration
Abbott Laboratories has developed a portable tool to help law enforcement agencies crack down on people driving under the influence. The Abbott Park, IL-based company looks to expand the reach of the diagnostic tool – SoToxa Mobile Test System- through a marketing agreement with Intoximeters.
SoToxa is an oral fluid roadside testing solution that rapidly detects recent drug use. The device tests for marijuana, cocaine, opiates, methadone, amphetamine, and benzodiazepines. Abbott inherited the device when it acquired Alere in 2017 for $5.3 billion.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Two people are dead and a police sergeant and a woman are injured following a shooting at a methadone clinic in Baltimore, police said Monday.
Baltimore Police Commissioner Michael Harrison said at a news conference that the sergeant is in stable condition and had gone into surgery.
Harrison said the suspect who fired at the sergeant is dead as well as another person who was found inside the clinic. The woman who was injured is expected to survive.
Harrison said the shooting was reported shortly after 7 a.m. and was captured on video by the body cameras of the officers who responded to the clinic.

Study Finds CBD Effective In Treating Heroin Addiction
(CNN) — Cannabidiol, the non-psychoactive ingredient in hemp and marijuana, could treat opioid addiction, a new study says. Given to patients with heroin addiction, cannabidiol, also known as CBD, reduced their cravings for the illicit drug as well as their levels of anxiety.
“The intense craving is what drives the drug use,” said Yasmin Hurd, the lead researcher on the study and director of the Addiction Institute of Mount Sinai. “If we can have the medications that can dampen that [craving], that can greatly reduce the chance of relapse and overdose risk.”

Chautauqua hospital gets DOH approval for methadone at new site
UPMC Chautauqua has received approval to open Chautauqua County ’s first outpatient methadone program at a site in Jamestown.
