Are Sleeping Pills Safe? Here ’s What Research Says
According to the latest numbers, roughly 9 million Americans — 4% of U.S. adults — use prescription sleep aids, or medications that can help with insomnia and other sleep issues. And now, some of the most popular prescription sleep drugs must carry stronger safety warnings. In April, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) mandated black-box warnings — which the agency uses to “call attention to serious or life-threatening risks” — on three sedative-hypnotic sleep aids: eszopiclone (often sold under the brand name Lunesta), zaleplon (Sonata) and zolpidem (Ambien). Hypnotic drugs, which ar...

Researchers create the first maps of two melatonin receptors essential for sleep
(DOE/SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory) An international team of researchers used an X-ray laser at the Department of Energy's SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory to create the first detailed maps of two melatonin receptors that tell our bodies when to go to sleep or wake up and guide other biological processes. A better understanding of how they work could enable researchers to design better drugs to combat sleep disorders, cancer and type 2 diabetes. Their findings were published in two papers today in Nature. (Source: EurekAlert! - Cancer)

10 Biggest Myths About Sleeping, According To Researchers
(CNN) — Hey, sleepyheads. What you believe about sleep may be nothing but a pipe dream. Many of us have notions about sleep that have little basis in fact and may even be harmful to our health, according to researchers at NYU Langone Health’s School of Medicine, who conducted a study published Tuesday in the journal Sleep Health. “There’s such a link between good sleep and our waking success,” said lead study investigator Rebecca Robbins, a postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Population Health at NYU Langone Health. “And yet we often find ourselves debunking myths, whether ...

While it’s hard not to notice the brilliant display of colors set off by a sunset over the water, we seldom consider the biological, or even psychological, benefits of light. “It is my belief that good quality light in our daily lives is far more important than we might think,” writes Karl Ryberg. In his new book, Living Light: The Art of Using Light For Health And Happiness, Ryberg brings us his life’s work — studying the obvious and not so obvious ways in which light affects us and how we can use light in our lives not only function better, but feel better. Rainfall affects our mood, our propensity to commit crime and how hungry we feel – but why?It ’s raining, it’s pouring, the old man is snoring. Can You Really Catch Up on Lost Sleep? Here ’s What the Science Says
Experts have long said that you can’t make up for lost sleep by snoozing more on your days off. But in 2018, a study published in the Journal of Sleep Research called that conclusion into question, suggesting that sleeping in on days off could cancel out at least some of the health risks associated with work-week sleep deprivation, including the threat of early death. But a study recently published in Current Biology echoes previous convictions. It says extra weekend rest is not enough to make up for sleep lost during the week, and concludes that the “benefits of weekend recovery sleep are transient.” C...

Children With Autism More Than Twice As Likely To Have Trouble Sleeping
BOSTON (CBS) – According to a study in the journal Pediatrics, young children with autism have a harder time getting to sleep and staying asleep. Researchers examined the sleep habits of almost 2,000 kids between the ages of 2 and 5 and found that while about a quarter of the kids in the general population had sleep problems, kids on the autism spectrum and those with other developmental delays with characteristics of autism were more than twice as likely to have sleep problems. Children with autism often have anxiety, difficulty making transitions and differences in melatonin production, all of which may contribute....
