Skin cancers are the most frequent cancers in fair-skinned populations, but we can prevent them.
Cancers of the skin are the most commonly occurring cancers in humans. In fair-skinned populations, up to 95% of keratinocyte skin cancers and 70-95% of cutaneous melanomas are caused by ultraviolet radiation and are thus theoretically preventable. Currently, however, there is no comprehensive global advice on practical steps to be taken to reduce the toll of skin cancer. To address this gap, an expert working group comprising clinicians and researchers from Africa, America, Asia, Australia, and Europe, together with learned societies (European Association of Dermato-Oncology, Euromelanoma, Euroskin, European Union of Medi...

Influence of Post-radiation Ocular Surface Disorder on Ocular Surgery: A Case Report and Review of the Literature
CONCLUSION: The continuous worsening of clinical symptoms of the disorder of the ocular surface after proton beam radiotherapy can be the result of a post-radiation syndrome. Gradual expansion of ischemia, vasculitis, and inflammatory mediators compresses the retinal tissue, leading to recurrent macular edema as well as to secondary glaucoma and corneal decompensation. Band keratopathy is occasionally noted and seems to result from severe post-radiation disorder of the ocular surface. However, PKP would typically be indicated in cases of corneal perforation, uncontrolled infectious keratitis, or for improving vision in the...

GSE255541 Neratinib, a pan ERBB/HER inhibitor, restores sensitivity of PTEN-null, BRAFV600E melanoma to BRAF/MEK inhibition
Contributor : Steven P AngusSeries Type : Expression profiling by high throughput sequencingOrganism : Homo sapiensApproximately 50% of melanomas harbor an activating BRAFV600E mutation. Standard of care involves a combination of inhibitors targeting mutant BRAF and MEK1/2, the substrate for BRAF in the MAPK pathway. PTEN loss of function mutations occur in 40% of BRAFV600E melanomas, resulting in increased PI3K/AKT activity that enhances resistance to BRAF/MEK combination inhibitor therapy. To compare the response of PTEN null to PTEN wild type cells in an isogenic background, CRISPR was used to knock out PTEN a melanoma ...

The diagnostic performance of [18F]FDG PET/CT in the detection of melanoma recurrence: a systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionIt finds that [18F]FDG PET/CT has excellent diagnosis performance in identifying malignant melanoma recurrence. Its application could improve patient prognosis by detecting and treating recurrences earlier. Further studies need more prospective large samples. (Source: Clinical and Translational Imaging)

Sarcoid-Like Reactions to Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors: Incidence, Treatment Course, and Impact on Cancer Progression and Survival
CONCLUSIONS: SLRs are a known but understudied complication associated with ICI therapy. Multisystem SLR patients were more symptomatic and required ICI discontinuation and immune suppression. Larger studies are needed to fully evaluate the impact of SLR on cancer outcomes.PMID:38648910 | DOI:10.1016/j.rmed.2024.107640 (Source: Respiratory Care)

[[Translated article]]Discussion Abounds on the Potential Carcinogenic Risks Associated With the Use of UV Curing Lamps for Permanent Nail Polish
CONCLUSIONS: The exposure times and doses received with the common use of artificial lamp nail drying correspond to sunlight exposures of 3 min to 5 min in the central hours of the day. This represents a very low carcinogenic potential compared to sunlight exposure, although similar regarding immunosuppressive potential. Photoprotective measures would further minimize the risks.PMID:38648931 | DOI:10.1016/j.ad.2024.04.006 (Source: Actas Dermo-Sifiliograficas)

Expression of c-erb-B2 oncoprotein as a neoantigen strategy to repurpose anti-neu antibody therapy in a model of melanoma
In this study, we tested a novel approach of "repurposing" a biomarker typically associated with breast cancer for use in melanoma. HER2/neu is a well characterized biomarker in breast cancer for which effective anti-HER2/neu therapies are readily available. We constructed a lentivirus encoding c-erb-B2 (the animal homolog to HER2/neu). This was used to transfect B16 melanoma in vitro for use in an orthotopic preclinical mouse model, which resulted in expression of c-erb-B2 as a neoantigen target for anti-c-erb-B2 monoclonal antibody (7.16.4). The c-erb-B2-expressing melanoma was designated B16/neu. 7.16.4 produced statist...
