Looking into a community mental health clinic job
I am finishing training in the Spring looking into a particular outpatient job affiliated with an academic institution. It is considered a state mental health clinic, and takes medicaid patients. I like the idea of working with residents and the location is good. The pay is a substellar but reasonable guaranteed salary. I have not yet worked with Medicaid outpatients so I was wondering what questions I need to ask about how the clinic is run before I pursue this job further. I am very... Charity Care
Now that I'm done practicing medicine for a paycheck, I've been wondering how I can use some of my skills to benefit humanity. My interest would be in straight charity care, seeing and treating eligible people without charging them a dime. You'd have to find a way to limit the number of people you saw before everyone in the planet beat a path to your door. I think this would start by opting out of CMS and not seeing medicare and medicaid patients. I also wouldn't see commercially insured... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

CMS Comment time
About that time again. Time to submit comments to CMS to help avoid reimbursement cuts. I believe telehealth and some other issues are also still on the table. Please take a couple minutes to submit. You do not have to be an APA member, and it literally takes like 2 minutes with the template that APA provides, but feel free to personalize it for more impact. Work at a Medicaid Office vs. PPO?!
Hi All, I would really appreciate other dentists opinions on here as I've only been practicing a year. I'm a General Dentist at a Medicaid office in a LARGE city. Now it isn't a dental dreams type office, & we see some PPO as well (about 1-3 a day), BUT at the end off the day I see about 15-20 patients everyday (very difficult low income patients), and it gets very tiring as you can imagine (along with the incompetence of the front desk and dental assistants). BUT, with all the BS I deal... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

What are the best study materials to learn more about healthcare industry/problems in medicine/etc.
Does anyone have any recommendations for condensed study guides or short books (i.e. please do not link general websites with thousands of links) for interviews to prepare for healthcare industry/biggest problems in medicine/life of a physician/Medicare/Medicaid/ACA/healthcare policy? I have already read The Healthcare Handbook by Askin. Thank you. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

It's that time of year folks. CMS released it's proposed fee schedule for 2022
CMS gives us a real good one here. Calendar Year (CY) 2022 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule Proposed Rule | CMS On July 13, 2021, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a proposed rule that announces and solicits public comments on proposed policy changes for Medicare payments under the Physician Fee Schedule (PFS), and other Medicare Part B issues, on or after January 1, 2022. www.cms.gov Looks like we get a lovely 3.75% decrease. Do you think my malpractice carrier will decrease my premium...

Expected earnings from 70/30 outpatient split job?
Hi. I interviewed with a clinic that takes most insurance plans except Medicaid. He said working 40 hours with 5 weeks off a year, I could expect to make 400 k a year. This sounds like BS to me. Is this likely? Southeast Michigan area. My psychiatrist has a 70/30 job but he does a lot of therapy so he doesn't make this and isn't a good comparison. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Amazon telemedicine
Amazon Care is a big deal - here's why With its promise of virtual care in all 50 states, this is the first time a big tech firm will be directly in the healthcare services business. Will it be another failed experiment, or the breakthrough we've been waiting for? www.healthcareitnews.com Amazon likely getting into primary care this summer. Would be interesting to see how it goes. Realistic income in a practice that accepts medicare/medicaid patients
Ive always wanted to serve lower income patients, and eventually i want to join/open a practice that accepts patients with medicare/medicaid. Unfortunately, i have not found a mentor in my community who accepts these patients, so i dont have a clear idea of how successful their practice is. Money is not the most important thing to me, i chose dentistry because i love it, but obviously i do have loans to pay off. So what can i expect to make in a practice that accepts state insurance? Is... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Arranging follow up: medical-legal risk?
I'm a newish EM attending, who recently started practicing in a new hospital that has much fewer resources than places I've previously worked. The call panel gets more and more bare bones everyday--no neurosurg, cardiothoracic, ENT, ophtho, OMFS, ortho, plastics, hand. On top of that, the population is heavily Spanish-speaking only, heavily uninsured/Medicaid only, and patients frequently have no PMD. Wondering if anyone can share best practices on how they set up follow up care with... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Understanding insurance
Hey all, so, I'm only a M1 but mad people in my life come up to me with questions about insurance, different plans, HMOs, etc, etc. acting like I should know all of this (and honestly I probably should though), I've been on Medicaid most of my adult life so my knowledge doesn't extend much beyond what I've personally dealt with. What is a decent, succinct, resource I could go through to have the knowledgebase to answer the ins and outs of insurance-based questions? Thanks! (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Pill Mill Shutdown
I'm hospital employed. Recently, a local pain management clinic was shut down. It was cash pay, non-Interventional. MED doses ranging from 30-300, probably 80% of patients on Benzos, vast majority uninsured or "self pay" with a smattering of Medicaid. These patients have now fled into the community and most are seeing their PCP's, who give one month refills of their old regimen and then "refer to pain management." All the local PP's in town block them at the level of the receptionist, so... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

New Dentist advice/ mentorship
I am a new dentist working in a medicaid office and there's been quite a few times I'm put in situations where I feel rushed or pushed to do procedures I'm not comfortable with. Mentorship is low in my office and I feel like I need an experienced dentist mentor who I can be very honest with to give me advice in difficult situations. Also any forums, courses would you suggest to further my skills? I have a year contract with my office, but I'm not sure I can handle the work environment... Medicare /medicaid pts and cash practice
Is it true that one must specifically opt out of Medicare / medicaid prior to charging a patient out of pocket for a cash private practice visit? Am I only allowed to charge the patient whatever their Medicare/medicaid fee schedule would allow? (Source: Student Doctor Network)
