Mechanistic insights into the reactive radicals-assisted degradation of sulfamethoxazole via calcium peroxide activation by manganese-incorporated iron oxide–graphene nanocomposite: Formation of radicals and degradation pathway
In this study, fabrication of manganese-incorporated iron oxide-graphene nanocomposite (rGO-FMBO) was reported for the efficient activation of CaO2 and generation of reactive radicals for the degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX). The effects of different systems, catalyst dosage, oxidant dosage, different pH and different reaction time on the degradation of SMX by rGO-APTMS-FMBO/CaO2 as well as the production of free radicals were also studied. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) technique was used to detect and identify the radical species in this oxidation system and these radicals were further confirmed by scavenging...

Role of GAC-MnO2 catalyst for triggering the extracellular electron transfer and boosting CH4 production in syntrophic methanogenesis
This study proposed a strategy to boost the CH4 production by adding granular activated carbon (GAC)-MnO2 nanocomposites into an anaerobic methanogenic system. The associated mechanisms and the microbial community structure during anaerobic digestion were investigated systematically. Compared with a control with GAC only, after adding GAC-MnO2 composite the chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency and CH4 yield were increased by 77% and 36%, respectively. The addition of GAC-MnO2 stimulated the secretion of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS), while the secretion of humic substances was inhibited. The spatial di...

The solute carriers ZIP8 and ZIP14 regulate manganese accumulation in brain microvascular endothelial cells and control brain manganese levels [Neurobiology]
In this study, we have determined that ZIP8 and ZIP14 (Zrt- and Irt-like proteins 8 and 14) support Mn2+ uptake by BMVECs and that neither DMT1 nor an endocytosis-dependent pathway play any significant role in Mn2+ uptake. Specifically, siRNA-mediated knockdown of ZIP8 and ZIP14 coincided with a decrease in manganese uptake, and kinetic analyses revealed that manganese uptake depends on pH and bicarbonate and is up-regulated by lipopolysaccharide, all biochemical markers of ZIP8 or ZIP14 activity. Mn2+ uptake also was associated with cell-surface membrane presentation of ZIP8 and ZIP14, as indicated by membrane protein bio...

Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution: Discontinuity ‐Enhanced Thin Film Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution (Small 50/2019)
Discontinuous cobalt manganese oxyhydroxide (CMOH) film shows much higher atom efficiency and performance in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) than the completely continuous ones. In article numberhttps://doi.org/10.1002/smll.2019033631903363, Jiaxing Huang, and Chun ‐Hu Chen, and co‐workers prove that the heterojunction edges are responsible for the OER enhancement with facilitated charge transport and kinetics. This concept is highly valuable for reducing the catalysts dosage but gaining even better, durable OER activities. (Source: Small)

Multi-elemental concentration in different body parts of Sepiella inermis by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry.
Abstract The present study examined the accumulation of metal on Sepiella inermis from the Mudasalodai Landing Center, from southeast coastal region of India. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used to determine metals including aluminium, boron, cadmium, cobalt, chromium, copper, iron, manganese, magnesium, nickel, lead and zinc. The results showed that metal concentration in S. inermis detected in the head, arm, mantle, eye, ink, liver and nidamental gland with higher concentration of magnesium up to 992.78 mg/kg, and tentacle showed maximum concentration of aluminium 306.72 mg/k...

Four paralogous Gfh factors in the extremophilic bacterium Deinococcus peraridilitoris have distinct effects on various steps of transcription.
Abstract Gre factors are ubiquitous transcription regulators that stimulate co-transcriptional RNA cleavage by bacterial RNA polymerase (RNAP). Here, we show that the stress-resistant bacterium Deinococcus peraridilitoris encodes four Gre factor homologs, Gfh proteins, that have distinct effects on transcription by RNAP. Two of the factors, Gfh1α and Gfh2β inhibit transcription initiation, and one of them, Gfh1α can also regulate transcription elongation. We show that this factor strongly stimulates transcriptional pausing and intrinsic termination in the presence of manganese ions but has no effe...
