Malaria infection and predictor factors among Chadian nomads' children
CONCLUSIONS: Malaria remains a significant public health issue in the nomadic communities of Chad. Community education and sensitization programs within nomad communities are recommended to raise awareness about malaria transmission and control methods, particularly among those living in remote rural areas. The National Malaria Control Program (NMCP) should increase both the coverage and use of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) and seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) in addition to promoting treatment-seeking behaviors in nomadic communities.PMID:38549091 | DOI:10.1186/s12889-024-18454-5 (Source: Rural Remote Health)

Effect of Malaria and < em > Schistosoma mansoni < /em > Coinfection on Selected Biochemical Profiles among Patients Attending Selected Health Institutions at Dembiya, Northwest Ethiopia
CONCLUSION: Biochemical profiles in coinfection were significantly changed as compared to healthy individuals. As a result, biochemical profile tests should be utilized to monitor and manage coinfection-related problems, as well as to reduce coinfection-related morbidity and death.PMID:38549565 | PMC:PMC10978076 | DOI:10.1155/2024/9992233 (Source: Journal of Tropical Medicine)

Assessment of < i > Culicidae < /i > collection methods for xenomonitoring lymphatic filariasis in malaria co-infection context in Burkina Faso
Conclusions/SignificanceThis study revealed that HLC indoor and outdoor remained the most effective collection method. Likewise, the results showed the probability to use Window Exit-Trap and PSC collection methods to sampleAnopheles infected. (Source: PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases)

Efficacy of artesunate-amodiaquine for treatment of uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria in mainland Tanzania
Diversification of artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) is suggested as one of the strategies that can be used to contain artemisinin resistance. Artesunate-amodiaquine (ASAQ) is one of the artemisinin-... (Source: Malaria Journal)

Population-specific variations in < em > KCNH2 < /em > predispose patients to delayed ventricular repolarization upon dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine therapy
Antimicrob Agents Chemother. 2024 Mar 28:e0139023. doi: 10.1128/aac.01390-23. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDihydroartemisinin-piperaquine is efficacious for the treatment of uncomplicated malaria and its use is increasing globally. Despite the positive results in fighting malaria, inhibition of the Kv11.1 channel (hERG; encoded by the KCNH2 gene) by piperaquine has raised concerns about cardiac safety. Whether genetic factors could modulate the risk of piperaquine-mediated QT prolongations remained unclear. Here, we first profiled the genetic landscape of KCNH2 variability using data from 141,614 individuals. Overall, we ...

Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1321: Antineoplastic Drug Synergy of Artesunate with Navitoclax in Models of High-Grade Serous Ovarian Cancer
M. Kolesar Artesunate belongs to a class of medications derived from the sweet wormwood plant (Artemisia annua) known as artemisinins. Artesunate has traditionally been used as a frontline treatment for severe malaria but has also demonstrated antineoplastic activity against various malignancies, including ovarian cancer. Data suggest that artesunate exacerbates cellular oxidative stress, triggering apoptosis. In the current study, we investigated the ability of navitoclax, an inhibitor of the antiapoptotic Bcl-2 protein family, to enhance artesunate efficacy in ovarian cancer cells. Artesunate and navitoclax both dem...
