Tea with Oliver Sacks: Will Self, Andrew Solomon and Sue Halpern pay tribute
The death of Oliver Sacks this week made headlines, some of them surprising. Three writers pay tribute to an ardent observer, whose literary portraits of his patients are rich in compassion, insight and humourHaving met the late Oliver Sacks, neurologist and writer, only twice in my life, the occasions separated by some 36 years, I certainly cannot pretend to any friendship or even acquaintance. Nonetheless, I think I can speak for hundreds, if not thousands, who, while not especially close, nevertheless felt physically touched by the life of this extraordinary man. Ultrasound, algorithms to diagnose bacterial meningitis in babies
Currently the only test to diagnose bacterial meningitis in babies is through a lumbar puncture, a painful and difficult procedure to perform. For this reason, a group of biomedical engineers decided to search for an alternative and developed a portable device that can detect this illness with a simple ultrasound scan of the fontanelle. The high-resolution image obtained is then analyzed with algorithms and within seconds indicates if there is cellularity in the cerebrospinal fluid that is sign of infection. Evaluation and Treatment of Fetal Exposure to Toxoplasmosis
Symptomatic congenital toxoplasmosis is a rare disease in the United States. However, prenatal screening is becoming increasingly available, resulting in identification of infants at risk of developing the disease. What Causes Neck Stiffness?
Discussion The complaint of neck stiffness always makes the clinician a little concerned until he/she understands the whole history because of the potential diagnosis of meningitis/encephalitis. While this potential is always concerning, there are many other causes of neck stiffness or pain to consider that are much more common. Normal wear and tear, injury or overuse that occur in daily activities and work can cause neck stiffness or pain. Often, even in adults, the cause of the pain is not recognized. What Causes Ataxia?
Discussion Coordination and balance problems are caused by various problems affecting the central and peripheral nervous system. Normal development of a child or weakness of a child are commonly mistaken for true ataxia. Ataxia specifically refers to “…impairment of the coordination of movement without loss of muscle strength.” If it is purely due to abnormalities of the cerebellum then there should be no changes in mental status, sensation or weakness. Sometimes it is difficult to determine if there are abnormalities in other areas. For example, Guillian-Barre often presents with difficulty or clumsy wal...
