Men’s virility… much more than low-T
A low level of testosterone (“low-T”) is a huge problem for my older male patients… and it goes far beyond a decline in sexual drive. How low-T affects your health… Low-T associated with aging also causes decreased muscle mass and bone density, reduced insulin resistance and energy, and even depression. But going to a “low-T” clinic is not going to help you. These places are often fly-by-night operations that hand out “prescriptions” for testosterone that are rubber stamped by doctors who don’t even see the men coming into the clinics. Even worse, they don’t understand the testosterone protocol you M...

Venus and Mars Hormones
Men are from Mars. Women are from Venus. This one book from best-selling author John Gray built a publishing empire. Even if you’ve never read it, I’m sure you’ve heard of it. Released in 1993, this book went on to sell more than 50 million copies and is considered the “highest ranked work of non-fiction of the 1990s.” When I read the book years ago, I remember the clarity it brought to relationships, and how we can make them stronger and more meaningful. Today, John Gray has added an anti-aging component to his books and lectures, and that’s why I’m writing to you today. Just last week, John Gray was a featu...

Is treating “low T” really safe and effective?
An ongoing pharmaceutical marketing blitz promises that treating “low T” with a daily prescription testosterone boost will make men with age-related decline in this hormone feel more alert, energetic, mentally sharp, and fully functional in the bedroom. But in an article published this week in the Perspectives section of The New England Journal of Medicine, a group of FDA scientists reiterated concerns over the widespread use of testosterone supplements in light of unresolved controversies over its effectiveness and long-term safety. Is testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) delivering what these men expect it to? Dr. ...

Is Testosterone Treatment Safe And Effective?
Testosterone, the hormone most responsible for "maleness" in men, naturally declines with age. Drug companies have capitalized on this fact, and on the vague symptoms that make up the non-medical, popular term "andropause". Supposedly, low or even low-ish testosterone levels can make men feel bad---really, really bad. Symptoms attributed to this putative condition range from sexual dysfunction, to fatigue, mood changes, and irritability. Unfortunately, all of these symptoms are common and vague, making it difficult to find out if low testosterone is responsible for the symptoms. (Source: Forbes.com Healthcare News)

Testosterone Therapy Isn't All It's Cracked Up To Be, Study Finds
Millions of men, mostly over the age of 50, are now using testosterone therapy to treat a broad array of symptoms -- erectile dysfunction, weight gain, listlessness -- thought to be caused by low testosterone levels, which the pharmaceutical industry in copious advertising calls "Low-T."  But a major new study from a team of researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston -- one of the biggest double-blinded studies of the therapy so far -- indicates that testosterone doesn't work as advertised. The team, led by endocrinologist Dr. Shalender Bhasin, gave 306 men over the age of 60, all of whom had low ...
