Prevalence and biopsychosocial factors associated with a current episode of low back pain amongst adults with previous history of low back pain: a cross-sectional study of market traders in an African population
Low back pain (LBP) is the leading cause of years lived with disability globally, with Nigeria having one of the greatest burdens. A current episode of LBP is important in Nigeria, but the associated factors are unknown. This cross-sectional study investigated the prevalence, biomechanical and psychosocial factors associated with a current episode of LBP amongst 700 adult market traders with previous LBP in an urban Nigerian population. Descriptive, bivariate, and multivariate analyses were conducted. (Source: The Journal of Pain)

Statistical and video graphic posture analysis of work-related musculoskeletal disorders among carpet weavers in Kashmir, India
Handmade carpet weaving involves intense mental focus as well as extended periods of sitting in an awkward posture. Prolonged sitting in the same squat position causes musculoskeletal disorders in various motor parts of the body. Weavers are at high risk of developing Work-related Musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) such as carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and low back pain (LB) due to the long working durations. Factors associated with the progression of sagittal spinal deformity after total hip arthroplasty: a propensity score-matched cohort study
ConclusionPI is associated with the development of a positive sagittal spinal malalignment post-THA. This finding can assist surgeons in managing patient expectations and in optimising outcomes. Feasible strategies are warranted to minimise the risk of spinal deformity progression post-THA. (Source: International Orthopaedics)

Engineered extracellular vesicle-based gene therapy for the treatment of discogenic back pain
Biomaterials. 2024 Apr 1;308:122562. doi: 10.1016/j.biomaterials.2024.122562. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPainful musculoskeletal disorders such as intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration associated with chronic low back pain (termed "Discogenic back pain", DBP), are a significant socio-economic burden worldwide and contribute to the growing opioid crisis. Yet there are very few if any successful interventions that can restore the tissue's structure and function while also addressing the symptomatic pain. Here we have developed a novel non-viral gene therapy, using engineered extracellular vesicles (eEVs) to deliver the d...

How to inject sacroiliac joints with ultrasound guidance: a pictorial essay
AbstractActive sacroiliitis and sacroiliac joint dysfunction represent a common cause of low back pain in the population and are cause of patients ’ quality of life reduction and disability worldwide. The use of musculoskeletal ultrasound allows to easily identify the sacroiliac joints and to study every pathological condition affecting its most dorsal part; moreover, musculoskeletal ultrasound allows to guide highly effective injective proc edures aimed at improving patients’ symptoms and enhance their well-being. This paper aims to briefly explain for the musculoskeletal sonographer the anatomy and biomechanics of th...

Effects of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation on pain, function, and descending inhibition in people with non-specific chronic low-back pain: a study protocol for a randomized crossover trial
Low back pain (LBP) is a significant public health problem, is very prevalent, and is often characterized by the persistence of symptoms. Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) may benefit people w... (Source: Trials)

Coexistence of ankylosing spondylitis and Beh çet's disease: Successful treatment with upadacitinib
ConclusionThis case fulfills diagnostic criteria for both AS and BD, emphasizing their coexistence. Notably, treatment with upadacitinib exhibited promising efficacy, underscoring its potential as a therapeutic option in patients with contraindications for conventional treatments. Our findings illuminate the intricate management of patients presenting with these two diverse systemic conditions and advocate for further exploration of JAK inhibitors in similar cases. Spondylodiscitis after sacral colpopexy: diagnose early to treat earlier
Int J Clin Exp Pathol. 2024 Mar 15;17(3):90-95. doi: 10.62347/RERC7901. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTSpondylodiscitis following sacral colpopexy for Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP) represents a rare complication with severe consequences. Authors performed a literature search, from 2000 to 2022, to set a narrative review of literature. Spondylodiscitis is an uncommon but dangerous side effect of a routine surgical treatment that needs to be identified and treated right away to prevent worsening clinical consequences. Suboptimal dissection of the sacral promontory and/or site infection are associated with spondylodiscitis. When spon...

Impact of bilateral facet joint violation on radiographic degeneration of superior adjacent segments and clinical outcomes
CONCLUSIONS: FJV was associated with postoperative low-back pain and worse functional outcomes. It also aggravated facet joint and intervertebral disc changes in the superior adjacent segment, especially when bilateral violation occurred; this may be part of the mechanisms of adjacent-segment degeneration.PMID:38579351 | DOI:10.3171/2024.1.SPINE23841 (Source: Journal of Neurosurgery.Spine)
