Efficacy, safety, and feasibility of Apixaban for postoperative venous thromboembolism prophylaxis following open gynecologic cancer surgery at a comprehensive cancer center
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings along with previously published data suggest that apixaban should be considered the standard of care for VTE prophylaxis in patients undergoing open surgery for gynecologic malignancies.PMID:38368180 | DOI:10.1016/j.ygyno.2024.01.039 (Source: Gynecologic Oncology)

Trends in Deep Vein Thrombosis Prophylaxis After Total Knee Arthroplasty: 2016 to 2021
In 2011, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons released a consensus recommending venous thromboembolism (VTE) prophylaxis after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The purpose of our study was to examine: (1) incidences of postoperative complications, including pulmonary embolism (PE), deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and transfusion rates; (2) trends from 2016 to 2021 in VTE prophylaxis; as well as (3) independent risk factors for 90-days total complications following TKA between aspirin, enoxaparin, rivaroxaban, and warfarin. Clinical and molecular determinants of bleeding-related adverse outcomes in high-grade glioma
ConclusionIn this study we found that the use of rivaroxaban was associated with more bleeding-related events compared to apixaban and enoxaparin in patients with high-grade glioma. In this study we also found that the diagnosis of astrocytoma, IDH mutant, grade 4 was associated with more bleeding events. However, this is based on a small study and there is a need for larger studies to further evaluate these results. (Source: Journal of Neuro-Oncology)

Anticoagulant prescribing patterns in patients with primary central nervous system malignancies and secondary metastases
AbstractTo evaluate the safety of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) versus low-molecular weight heparin (LMWH) in patients with central nervous system (CNS) malignancies and secondary metastases. All adult patients with CNS malignancies and secondary metastases who were treated with a DOAC or LMWH for any indication from 2018 to 2022 were included. The primary outcome was the incidence of any intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) after anticoagulation initiation. Secondary outcomes included non-ICH bleeding events and thromboembolic events. Tolerability was assessed by any changes in anticoagulant therapy during study period. 153...

Comparison of the safety  and efficacy for different regimens of pharmaco-prophylaxis among severely burned patients: a randomized controlled trial
ConclusionThe study observed a low recruitment rate but a high consent rate. Furthermore, there were no major safety concerns identified with any of the three pharmacologic prophylaxis regimens that were evaluated.Trial registration numberNCT05237726. Case Report: From epilepsy and uterus didelphys to Turner syndrome-associated dysgerminoma
We present a unique case of a 33-year-old nulliparous Chinese woman with intermittent epilepsy and Mullerian anomalies carrying a double uterus, cervix, and vagina. The patient is also characterized as having Turner syndrome accompanied by 46,X, del(Xp22.33-11.23) and del(2)(q11.1-11.2). MRI exhibited a 17.0 cm × 20.0 cm × 10.5 cm solid ovarian lesion. Radical surgery and pathology revealed dysgerminoma at stage IIIc with lymphatic metastases and a KIT gene mutation identified in exon 13. Furthermore, the tumor microenvironment (TME) displayed robust expression of CD4+ T lymphocytes and PD-1, whereas the distribution ...

Enoxaparin for VTE thromboprophylaxis during inpatient rehabilitation care: assessment of the standard fixed dosing regimen
CONCLUSIONS: Our study confirmed that a one-size-fits-all approach for venous thromboembolism (VTE) prophylaxis may be inadequate for rehabilitation patient populations. The efficacy of fixed-dose enoxaparin prophylaxis is limited and may be influenced by renal function and weight. This study suggests that anti-Xa studies and prophylactic enoxaparin dose adjustments should be considered in certain patients, such as those who are underweight, overweight and or have suboptimal renal function.TRIAL REGISTRATION: No. NCT103593291, registered August 2018.PMID:38200581 | PMC:PMC10782744 | DOI:10.1186/s40360-023-00728-0 (Source: ...

Routine extended (30 days) chemoprophylaxis for patients undergoing laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy may reduce Portomesenteric vein thrombosis rates
CONCLUSIONS: Routine extended (30 day) chemoprophylaxis for all SG may reduce PMVT rate but lead to a higher bleeding rate post-operatively. The vast majority of the increased bleeds are delayed and can be managed non-operatively.PMID:38195313 | DOI:10.1016/j.soard.2023.12.006 (Source: Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases : official journal of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery)
