A rare complication of IgA vasculitis: renal and intestinal ischemia successfully treated with plasmapheresis
CONCLUSIONS: Plasmapheresis seems to be an effective treatment option in IgAV-related ischemic findings that do not respond to intensive immunosuppressive therapy.PMID:37853978 | DOI:10.24953/turkjped.2022.935 (Source: The Turkish Journal of Pediatrics)

Enoxaparin for the long-term therapy of venous thromboembolism in patients with cancer and renal insufficiency
CONCLUSIONS: Among cancer patients with severe RI, fatal PE was 5-fold more common than fatal bleeding. The recommended doses of enoxaparin in these patients should be revisited.PMID:37832588 | DOI:10.1055/a-2191-7510 (Source: Thrombosis and Haemostasis)

A 68-Year-Old Patient With Dyspnea and Hypoxemia After Total Hip Arthroplasty
Chest. 2023 Oct;164(4):e107-e110. doi: 10.1016/j.chest.2023.04.046.ABSTRACTA 68-year-old patient with obesity (BMI, 4 7 kg/m2) was transferred to the ED of our hospital because of dyspnea and pronounced hypoxemia. The patient underwent total right hip arthroplasty in an outside hospital because of osteoarthritis; there was no history of trauma. After 48 h, she experienced dyspnea with severe hypoxemia. The next day she was transferred to our hospital. Her history was notable for arterial hypertension and depression, but not heart failure. Her medications included candesartan (16 mg once daily) and sertraline (100 mg once d...

Thiolated Cellulose: A Dual-Acting Mucoadhesive and Permeation-Enhancing Polymer
This study aims to design an anionic, thiolated cellulose derivative and to evaluate its mucoadhesive and permeation-enhancing properties utilizing enoxaparin as a model drug. 2-Mercaptosuccinic acid-modified cellulose (cellulose-mercaptosuccinate) was synthesized by the reaction of cellulose with S-acetylmercaptosuccinic anhydride. The chemical structure of the target compound was confirmed by FTIR and 1H NMR spectroscopy. The thiol content was determined by Ellman's test. The conjugate exhibited 215.5 ± 25 μmol/g of thiol groups and 84 ± 16 μmol/g of disulfide bonds. Because of thiolation, mucoadhesion on porcine int...

Low-molecular-weight heparin for the prevention of clinical worsening in severe non-critically ill COVID-19 patients: a joint analysis of two randomized controlled trials
AbstractCoronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) carries a high risk of vascular thrombosis. However, whether a specific anticoagulation intensity strategy may prevent clinical worsening in severe COVID-19 patients is still debated. We conducted a joint analysis of two randomized controlled trials, COVID-19 HD (NCT044082359) and EMOS-COVID (NCT04646655), to assess the efficacy and safety of two anticoagulant regimens in hospitalized severe COVID-19 patients. Subjects with COVID-19-associated respiratory compromise and/or coagulopathy were randomly assigned to low (4000 IU qd) or high (70  IU Kg−1 every 12  h) enoxaparin dos...

Extended Venous Thromboembolism Prophylaxis after Robotic Staging for Endometrial Cancer
CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of VTE following robot-assisted surgical staging for endometrial cancer in this study was 0.67%. No significant difference was found in VTE incidence between the PP group compared with the EP group. Mechanical prophylaxis plus a single dose of preoperative pharmacologic prophylaxis may suffice for low-risk patients following robotic surgical staging for endometrial cancer.PMID:37788812 | DOI:10.14423/SMJ.0000000000001611 (Source: Southern Medical Journal)
