Correlation between sentinel lymph node biopsy and non-sentinel lymph node metastasis in patients with cN0 breast carcinoma: comparison of invasive ductal carcinoma and invasive lobular carcinoma
Some studies have suggested that axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) can be avoided in women with cN0 breast cancer with 1 –2 positive sentinel nodes (SLNs). However, these studies included only a few patient... (Source: World Journal of Surgical Oncology)

Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1518: Ocular and Periocular Metastasis in Breast Cancer: Clinical Characteristics, Prognostic Factors and Treatment Outcome
Conclusions: Ocular metastasis in breast cancer is rare (0.5%) but signifies poor outcome. It is linked to ILC and concurrent brain metastasis. Primary treatment involves radiation therapy, with a favorable visual prognosis. (Source: Cancers)

Microenvironment-induced restoration of cohesive growth associated with focal activation of P-cadherin expression in lobular breast carcinoma metastatic to the colon
J Pathol Clin Res. 2024 Mar;10(2):e12361. doi: 10.1002/2056-4538.12361.ABSTRACTInvasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) is a special breast cancer type characterized by noncohesive growth and E-cadherin loss. Focal activation of P-cadherin expression in tumor cells that are deficient for E-cadherin occurs in a subset of ILCs. Switching from an E-cadherin deficient to P-cadherin proficient status (EPS) partially restores cell-cell adhesion leading to the formation of cohesive tubular elements. It is unknown what conditions control EPS. Here, we report on EPS in ILC metastases in the large bowel. We reviewed endoscopic colon biopsie...

Comparison of Clinical Breast Exam to Breast MRI Surveillance in Patients Following Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy
CONCLUSIONS: Compared to CBE alone, the use of screening MRI following NSM results in higher rate of biopsy and no difference in overall survival.PMID:38609794 | DOI:10.1016/j.clbc.2024.03.011 (Source: Clinical Breast Cancer)

68Ga-FAPI PET/CT as an Alternative to 18F-FDG PET/CT in the Imaging of Invasive Lobular Breast Carcinoma
Conclusion: This study underscores 68Ga-FAPI PET/CT’s superiority over 18F-FDG PET/CT for ILC. 68Ga-FAPI PET/CT excels in detecting primary breast masses, axillary lymph nodes, and distant metastases; can complement 18F-FDG PET/CT in ILC; and holds potential as an alternative imaging method in future studies. Is there a special role for ovarian hormones in the pathogenesis of lobular carcinoma?
Endocrinology. 2024 Mar 29:bqae031. doi: 10.1210/endocr/bqae031. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLobular carcinoma represent the most common special histological subtype of breast cancer, with the majority classed as hormone receptor-positive. Rates of invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) in postmenopausal women have been seen to increase globally, whilst other hormone receptor-positive breast cancers proportionally have not followed the same trend. This has been linked to exposure to exogenous ovarian hormones such as hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Reproductive factors resulting in increased lifetime exposure to endogenous ...

Comparison of long-term outcome between clinically high risk lobular versus ductal breast cancer: a propensity score matched study
EClinicalMedicine. 2024 Mar 20;71:102552. doi: 10.1016/j.eclinm.2024.102552. eCollection 2024 May.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Abemaciclib is currently approved for the adjuvant treatment of high-risk, lymph node (LN)-positive, hormone receptor (HR)-positive breast cancer (BC). In a real-world setting the clinicopathologic features of patients potentially eligible for adjuvant abemaciclib remain to be defined. There are conflicting data regarding the biological behavior and long-term outcomes across invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) and invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC). In our study we retrospectively assessed the real-world data and...

Image quality evaluation for a clinical organ-targeted PET camera
DiscussionDemonstrated ability to accurately reconstruct activity in tumors as small as 5 mm suggests that the Radialis PET technology may be well suited for emerging clinical applications such as image guided assessment of response to neoadjuvant systemic treatment (NST) in lesions smaller than 2 cm. Also, our results suggest that, while spatial resolution greatly influences the partial volume effect which degrades contrast recovery, optimized count rate performance and image reconstruction workflow may improve recovery coefficients for systems with comparable spatial resolution. We emphasize that recovery coefficient sho...

Recurrent severe hypocalcemia following chemotherapy regimen changes in advanced breast cancer: two case reports
ConclusionsWe observed two cases of recurrent severe hypocalcemia in patients with advanced breast cancer and bone metastases after modifications to their therapy regimens. These cases differed from the typical hypocalcemia induced by bone-modifying agents. It is possible that antitumor drugs affect calcium and bone metabolism associated with bone metastases. While these cases are rare, it is crucial for oncologists to be aware of hypocalcemia not only at the initiation of bone-modifying agents but also throughout the entire antitumor therapy, as hypocalcemia can lead to fatal outcomes. Comparison of Clinicopathological Features of Pleomorphic and Invasive Lobular Breast Carcinomas
CONCLUSION: We discovered that pleomorphic type was associated with higher grades, estrogen receptor negativity, and Ki-67 expression. The incidence of metachronous breast cancer was high in the pleomorphic group, which may be a noteworthy finding to be considered in follow-ups. In addition, the high rates of multicentricity and multifocality of tumors in the pleomorphic group may be associated with increased surgical margin positivity and a higher likelihood of mastectomy. In a nutshell, our findings may guide patients and surgeons regarding the type of intervention and reconstruction options to be adopted in prospective ...

Surgical outcomes of total duct excision in the diagnosis and management of nipple discharge
CONCLUSIONS: TDE can be considered for the diagnostics and management of nipple discharge. Blood-stained nipple discharge increases the risk of DCIS or malignancy, but the majority of the time TDE reveals benign breast pathology.PMID:38497796 | DOI:10.1308/rcsann.2022.0093 (Source: Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons of England)
