FDA Approves New Use for Immunotherapy Drug in Mesothelioma Treatment
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted orphan drug designation last week to the immunotherapy vaccine CRS-207, moving it one step closer to changing the way malignant pleural mesothelioma is treated. CRS-207 is derived from Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that causes the serious infection listeriosis. For the vaccine, the bacteria are weakened and genetically modified to produce an anti-tumor response without causing disease. Early results are impressive. The vaccine produced a 94 percent rate of disease control, either partial response or stable disease, according to a presentation made at the latest Inte...

World Health Day 2015: How Scientists Track Food Poisoning
Last week’s post on antibiotic resistance in the environment, promoted by herbicides and spread by dust storms from factory farms is a good segue into this week’s observance of the World Health Organization’s Safe Food Day. We also just had news of an outbreak of antibiotic resistant Shigella infections in the U.S., important because the bacteria is unexpectedly resistant to Ciprofloxacin, the oral antibiotic commonly used to treat it, and because it was widespread across the country. Before that there was a Listeria outbreak from ice cream. It seems like there is always something. (Source: Forbes.com Healthcare News)

Amid Pollution Problems, China's Health Food Industry Blossoms
At first glance, the World Health Store seems like any other health nut’s paradise: Shelves are cramped neck-high with supplement bars, whey protein for bodybuilders, Nature’s Bounty Evening Primrose Oil and Navitas Naturals Chia Powder. That growing fear of China’s ...

Your Upset Tummy Could Be Early Signs Of Parkinson’s
You’ve probably had a gut feeling once or twice in your life. That’s because your gut and your brain have a special connection. And that’s why the first sign of many brain disorders could be an upset stomach. I often explain to patients at my wellness clinic that nerve and biochemical pathways run between your gut and brain. And these might be linked to a number of degenerative illnesses, such as Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis, as well as mental health problems. In fact, the gut and brain share the same nerve chemistry and, with the help of microbes in your digestive tract, these two reg...

Antibiotic resistant salad: Resistant Listeria monocytogenes not as widespread as thought
Antibiotic-resistant strains of the food-poisoning microbe Listeria monocytogenes in unprocessed salad products is not quite as widespread as scientists originally suspected. A new study reveals that strains of the microbe falling into six distinct groups can all be found on such products, but 82 percent of those strains succumb to at least one of sixteen common antibiotics used in veterinary and human listeriosis treatment. Department of Defense Doubles Cancer Research Funding in 2015
Doctors and researchers seeking a cure for mesothelioma will soon be able to tap into millions of dollars set aside by the U.S. Department of Defense for cancer research. The Office of Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) invested $50 million in the Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program (PRCRP) for 2015 — an amount that doubles the money awarded to the program last year. With the additional funding, asbestos-related cancer researchers can extend current studies and launch new ones to improve traditional treatments, introduce emerging therapies or test new cancer drugs. Funding in 2014 was $25 m...

IBM Thinks it Can Make Your Food Safer: Will it Work?
Our food system is by no means bulletproof when it comes to pathogens. In just the past year, the United States saw major outbreaks of listeria in caramel apples and salmonella in nut butters, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 48 million Americans suffer from some kind of food-borne diseases annually. Meanwhile, food-borne illness results in $9 billion in medical costs and another $75 billion in contaminated food that’s recalled and tossed out every year. Regulatory agencies have acknowledged that more needs to be done. One strategy comes from IBM, which announced on Thursday tha...
