OHSU (Oregon) vs Geisel (Dartmouth)
Some general info - not sure on specialty yet so keeping options open is important, want to eventually practice in Montana (home state), no financial aid info yet but will likely be minimal, I'm married and my wife and I are considering kids in medical school/residency, I have a dog which makes housing a little tricky OHSU Pros: 15 miles from my in-laws house which would be amazing for support and potential children Great school with all the opportunities of a large medical center Tuition... Moral Injury and Burnout
It is no secret that I think it is pretty feasible to make a lot of money in psychiatry and that I don't lose sleep over midlevel encroachment. But that isn't to say I think everything about the field is good - the problems that bring me to the point of wanting to switch jobs or retire early are entirely different. I think the worst part of psychiatry is that you just have to eat a lot sh$t sometimes. Although actual lawsuits might be rare, the number of extremely stressful things that... Psychotic patient filing pro se lawsuit
Today I received a notice that a patient whom I saw as an inpatient a few years ago is filing a lawsuit pro se. It names numerous doctors, the hospital system, EMS, another state, even a retail store (where I'm assuming he was picked up, leading to hospitalization,) accusing us all of kidnapping him, torturing him, waging chemical warfare against him and subjecting him to terrorism, etc. Basically very typical complaints you hear all the time from paranoid, psychotic people who don't think... Deposition subpoena question
Hello, I have a patient who I've seen over the last few years. 2 years prior to meeting him he was in a significant motor vehicle collision. Recently my office received a notice that I was being subpoenaed to show up in court. Additionally this lawyer would like to meet up with me for several hours prior to discuss the case. Apparently our legal office reached out to him and I am in fact being subpoenaed so my assumption is in court I am a fact witness? I have read previous threads regarding... Lawsuits and NPDB
So if you have a lawsuit filed against you and you settle or you lose I think you have to report to the NPDB and then have to report this to every medical board and to all future employers, how big of a deal is this? Do you not get hired if you have had lawsuits? Is this a concern? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Visceral Rxn
Driving to inpatient in the AM in heavy traffic. Saw a billboard from a plaintiff's injury attorney with a website that caught my attention. *[state]*LAWDOCTOR.com (state deleted for anonymity) Turns out, the attorney graduated from dual JD/PhD in psychology program. The attorney's website specifically states that they continue to work on finishing the PhD dissertation. Cannot confirm whether they actually completed the dissertation. The law stuff is legit. Optum / UHC
I had been loosely following the historic attempts of Optum (UHC) to acquire ChangeHealthcare. It was potentially blocked by feds, took to court, and even hospital associations were against it. <--fact check these observations Fast forward, the deal was permitted to go through. The lateral expansion of Optum/UHC is a threat to the entire healthcare industry. They now already employ the most physicians of all healthcare entities. More than Kaiser, more than the VA, more than HCA... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Choosing between teaching and dentistry
Hi everyone, I’m a freshman in college, currently in my second semester, and I just don’t really know exactly what I want to do. Originally I wanted to become a lawyer and was a criminal justice major first semester, after shadowing lawyers I realized how bored I would be in that profession. Then after shadowing a few dentists, I thought I’d enjoy something like that and that obviously the money is good. So end of my first semester, I switched to a chemistry major on the pre dental track... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
