There ’s always money in the banana stand: what’s your plan B if medicine doesn’t work out?
I believe it was @Sushirolls who made an interesting comment in one of the recent threads here. A new attending was anxious about the possibility of a lawsuit or loss of licensure, and Sushirolls suggested having a plan B knocking around in case you have to, or choose to, stop practicing psychiatry. I thought it was a really interesting premise. So what’s everyone’s plan B? Sometimes I think about learning a trade. Prior to medical school, I did some blue-collar jobs. It was hard... Dr Nurse - I see both sides
https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2023/07/18/doctor-nurse-title-lawsuit-california/ I can see both sides to this. On one hand, if I spend the time getting a doctorate, I should be able to celebrate that fact in title. Do PhD professors get called Dr Smartypants when addressed? Jack Ryan (in the Tom Clancy series) is called Dr Ryan. BUT.... How does the Dr Nurse want to let the world know he/she isn't a physician? How do they propose we introduce ourselves to distinguish us... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Thinking of getting sued is consuming me
I've been out of residency a few weeks now and the thought of a malpractice suit is killing me. It's on my mind in every patient interaction. I find myself bending over backwards to accommodate patients because I'm afraid of a potential lawsuit down the road. Everyday I go to work in wondering if today is the day something happens that leads to a suit. It feels unsustainable to work in a career where this is always going to be a concern. I never thought I'd be so impacted by this yet here I... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
