Re-engineering Medical Devices to Stay Competitive
Medical device products nearing the end of their lifecycle pose unique challenges to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Products with still-proven value to end-users and patients can be vulnerable to market forces. An upcoming patent expiration, in particular, can result in loss of market share for OEMs because of increased competition from competitors looking to replicate a successful design at a lower price point. Study Shows MIGS Makes up Nearly Half of Glaucoma Surgical Device Revenue
Micro-invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) stents are quickly becoming the norm. A new study from Market Scope titled “2019 Glaucoma Surgical Device Market Report,” shows that MIGS stents account for almost half of all glaucoma surgical device revenue in 2019. The device could be used to widen the urinary tract in a fetus and prevent life-threatening levels of urine from collecting in the bladder. Approximately one in every thousand children reportedly develop a urethral stricture, sometimes while they are still in the womb. The micro-stent made from a shape-memory polymer measures 50 micrometers wide and 1/2 millimeter in length. Image courtesy Carmela de Marco/ETH Zürich. Researchers at ...
