Pneumothorax during shoulder surgery
Tidsskr Nor Laegeforen. 2024 Apr 4;144(5). doi: 10.4045/tidsskr.23.0542. Print 2024 Apr 23.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Pneumothorax following shoulder arthroscopy, although rare, is documented in over 30 PubMed case reports as occurring during or within 10 hours post-procedure.CASE PRESENTATION: A fit septuagenarian underwent a two-hour arthroscopic rotator cuff repair with IV anaesthesia and laryngeal mask airway, without a nerve block. With one hour remaining of the operation, the patient had desaturation and hypotension. Lung sliding was absent on ultrasound and x-ray confirmed left-sided tension pneumothorax. Successful thorac...

Comparison of BlockBuster laryngeal mask with Air-Q intubating laryngeal airway as a conduit for fiber-optic guided intubation in children: A prospective randomized controlled study
CONCLUSION: BlockBuster SGA may be a useful alternative to Air-Q for SGA-assisted, fiber-optic-guided tracheal intubation in children.PMID:38646953 | DOI:10.1111/pan.14906 (Source: Paediatric Anaesthesia)

Removal of airway foreign body using flexible bronchoscopy in children
CONCLUSION: AFB removal using a flexible bronchoscope is an efficient and safe procedure when performed by an experienced team. The recent use of LMA has facilitated the use of a larger bronchofiberscope and the insertion of multiple tools that can reach distal airways.PMID:38637247 | DOI:10.1016/j.arcped.2024.01.008 (Source: Archives de Pediatrie)

Use of laryngeal mask airway with continuous transcutaneous PCO2-monitoring for crico-tracheal resection requiring intermittent prolonged apnea in a pregnant woman
Subglottic stenosis (SGS) is characterized by a narrowed upper airway extending from just below the vocal folds to the lower border of the cricoid cartilage (1). SGS is either a congenital or an acquired condition of unknown pathophysiology generally accompanied by formation of scar tissue, fibrosis, and enhanced inflammation (2, 3). As the affected tissue contains estrogen receptors, growth hormones influence and impact its severity (2). Although several conservative and invasive treatment strategies exist, only crico-tracheal resection (CTR) can remove the constricting tissue completely and offers recurrence-free surviva...

The impact of an anesthesia residency teaching service on anesthesia-controlled time and postsurgical patient outcomes: a retrospective observational study on 15,084 surgical cases
CONCLUSION: Anesthesia residents do not increase anesthesia-controlled operating room times or adversely affect clinically relevant patient outcomes compared to anesthesiologists working independently or supervising certified registered nurse anesthetists or certified anesthesiologist assistants.PMID:38561787 | DOI:10.1186/s13037-024-00394-z (Source: Patient Safety in Surgery)

Minimal alveolar concentration of sevoflurane in combination with remimazolam in adults during laryngeal mask insertion: an up-down sequential allocation study
Remimazolam is a novel ultrashort-acting intravenous benzodiazepine sedative-hypnotic. The combination of remimazolam and sevoflurane does not increase respiratory sensitivity, produce bronchospasm, or cause o... (Source: BMC Anesthesiology)
